Covid-19 - status pause

As I usually do, in uncertain times when important things are afoot that I cannot easily decipher and predict, I settle back into a zen zone of accepting the difficulties, then finding a way to appreciate the glorious changes in the tapestry of Life.

In a philosophical way (and also to a great extent in a purely intellectual way) I understand the arising of pandemics and such as sheerly Nature's beautiful way of correcting things. Too many oil palm trees in a mono-culture - let's send a caterpillar, too many Chinese, lets send a virus..... etc etc.

And so this leads me, with a glass of wine or two, to realize that Mother Nature (or God, etc) has such a stunning all-round ability to manage things that perhaps this Corona virus really has nothing to do with a certain culture's penchant for eating bats. Maybe, just maybe, Mother Nature, or god, or Eywa, decided that the lounges have finally become too crowded. And this is their solution.

If this is true, as it is IMHO almost certainly, then I doubt teensy entities like QF will find a simple way to side step this desperately needed correction.... So forget status freezes :/ !!

Each to his own. if one does SO much travel for whatever reasons one can become a bit blase about it all?

I see the odd post in forums or FB about someone making Silver for the first time and retaining Gold and yeah I think whoopee.. but at the same time got to remember that just because *I* have LTG and P1 and *G and whatever... for others it's a massive acomplishment and I try to not belittle that at all (not that ANYONE here has in any way done anything like that).

I'm reminded of the recent / semi-current thread about attaining P1 using DSC which most of us who have gotten there one way or another think is quite mad is that's the only point to all that spend and flying.. but by the same token those that are attempting it.. good for them.

Everyone has different goals and travel lives.. and it's not a competition either

Sorry, maybe I should have added the current generation's need for a whole stack of "emoticons" or whatever they are called to signal sarcasm, humour, etc etc.

Edit: disruptivedolphn, foregive my manners - it is just that as a newer member there are perhaps some dialogues that may not make sense to you, but are the result or product of years of engagement with other members in this forum. I am certainly a chaotic individual, and many here have come to adjust to that. I note that you are a brand new member, and almost all of your posts relate to corona virus. I understand your interest and your passion on this topic. As much as I may say things that you disagree with, please be assurred that I value every single one of your posts, and beyond my personal chaos, I actually read and devour and contemplate these! I am no expert on the topic, as noone is yet. So by expressing viewpoints, and listening to those of others, I simply seek to eventually work out what I think is the most sane view. I have clipped some bits and with a wine or 2 under my belt I am more than happy for the DSC crowd and those who believe that that the company dime is the only way to travel be excluded from QF lounge be it Int or Dom and then things will be returned to the natural order.

This whole thing may actually inspire me to fly again - my first thought was that there will be some great discounts in travel (important as a 100% self-funded flyer). Then the QF DSC thing came out - and let's say I have made some bets there But then I thought, I do not want to get sick in some foreign country with this damned thing. So then it hit me - I need to get the virus and get over it, AND then continue on to a glorious recapture of P1.

I would never chase P1, as we have all agreed on so many times. But if I was going to fly again I want that back

Just a month ago the narrative was that too many pax had status and lounges were bursting at the seams due to DSCs and now no FFs are going to requal and they'll be taking their business elsewhere (to an airline that does gift status, I assume) unless status is gifted without even revenue flights being taken. What a difference a month (and a pandemic) makes.

Having been on this forum the better part of 20 years, I would suggest that a 20 year narrative is

"Whatever rules you need to change, make sure my access to the lounge remains, while minimising other peoples access to the lounge"

It's not a conspiracy at all. People are not good at risk assessment. Fear of the unknown causes panic, yet they happily get into their car without a second thought.

That's still not a reason to downplay covid-19. It'll mostly kill those of us who are 50+.

According to Italian media it already has. According to them, the virus circulating in northern Italy is a variant of the one from Wuhan. There is no information available yet as to whether it is considered better, worse, the same as Wuhan.
