Cricket WC final - MCG (MEL) or ANZ stadium (SYD)

The NSW gov has made calls for the AFL grand final to be played in Sydney (can you imagine the NRL in Melbourne? Even I can't) and made gestures for the tennis and F1.

wasn't it Kennett who called for the NRL state of origin to include Victoria? I remember HG and Roy agreeing it was a good idea and that Victoria would be able to field a competitive team, if they moved the border to the Georges River

I’m not sure about including them, but playing one match down there as a neutral ground would work nicely, didn’t they do that once?

They've done it at least twice now, and despite it being with a non Vic team.

I don't know if Kennett called for that, but I know NRL were wanting to do it for exposure.

No, no, no! Kennett (iirc) wanted a Victorian team included in the NRL state of origin, along side NSW and QLD. Hence having to move the border, to just south of botany bay, to give them a competitive team.

Completely separate to the games that have been played at the G.

I have the same opinion of AFL what ... :p
Who cares :?:

:D:D:D:D:D:D

Greater Western Sydney Giants ... what a joke ....doomed to be a failure , although the AFL will make sure its not by pumping $$$ to save face and at the expense of other AFL teams .....Sydney doesn't want to 2 teams.

Back to the topic, the almighty $$ will win here for the host of the Cricket WC final and i can only hope ANZ Stadium gets it , unlikely , but if it did, it would a great "SNAP" moment and i can hear the purists crying from the rafters if it happens.

A very passionate Sydney & NRL man here.

That great leader Jeffery Kennett seemed to care. :p

Just found the article and here are some excerpts:

THE National Rugby League will investigate the possibility of including Melbourne Storm in its successful state-of-origin competition after a suggestion from Premier Jeff Kennett.
Mr Kennett will make a formal approach to the NRL this week after watching Storm maul Western Suburbs 54-16 at Olympic Park on Friday night.

NRL chief executive Neil Whittaker responded positively to the suggestion yesterday, saying it was a distinct possibility in the future.
Mr Whittaker also said he was staggered by the level of interest generated by Melbourne Storm, which has a 7-1 win-loss record in its first season.
"I think it's fantastic they are so interested in rugby league down there," Mr Whittaker said.
"We're really keen on Jeff Kennett's ideas - I just think it is outstanding.
"You have to understand, though, we have a strong traditional rivalry in state-of-origin between New South Wales and Queensland, and we have to be protective of that as well."
Melbourne Storm officials are chuffed by Mr Kennett's overtures.

Seems the NRL were very keen on the idea - it was back in 1998 too. Funny though, we get bigger crowds at the NRL in Melbourne than they do in Sydney..

I agree 100% with you on West Sydney.. it should have gone to Tassie personally. Dimetriou is stubborn on that.. no idea why he thinks another Sydney team will work.

At the end of the day, the MCG can hold nearly 20,000 more than ANZ stadium which makes it the clear front runner. If the SCG held the same then if might be a different story.
