Cruising choices with an active Pandemic

Apropos of crew spreading disease, I was half listening to an interview on the BBC radio with a young English cruise crew member on board who said how hard to was as there is 4 to a cabin and who knows who has what. At all hours, crew had to keep going to pax every time they wanted something such as drinks, food etc etc or needed to go outside. The crew had to accompany them to ensure pax kept a distance from each other. But, the thing that made me mad was that every time a pax need to have a cigarette, they had to go and take them outside. Geez, I'd consider letting them go cold turkey to get over the addiction - be the best for thing for them and everyone else they were contaminating one way and another. ☹

A Viking River Cruise is being detained by Police in Cambodia due to two passengers testing positive. I can't think of what spending isolation in Cambodia might look like. They are on subsistence as it is and just can't afford it.

Viking have now cancelled all River and Ocean cruises until April 30th and the refund amounts are either 100% cash or 125% FCC which will be returned as cash if not used after 2 years.

RCI have padded things up with another $500m.. let's hope it is enough

Now Royal Caribbean is giving an update reflecting the impact of the coronavirus. Per its press release, all guidance for 2020 has been withdrawn. The company is also increasing its liquidity to make it through what will be a challenging year. In addition, it has increased its credit by $550 million and plans to cut costs to bring its total extra liquidity to $1.7 billion.

Is there an arbitrage opportunity there - do you get the FCC of 125% refunded as cash after 2 years if you have not used it? That would be a pretty good return with deposit rates around the 1% mark.

The FCC would be returned as cash if not used in 2 years. But only as much as you paid.
..

Princess has cancelled all global cruises for 2 months.
Doesn't appear to be across the other Carnival Group brands (including Carnival, P&O, Costa, Cunard, Holland, Searborn)

We are heading to Darwin, Australia for a March 18 docking now.
I need another glass, make that bottle, of champagne.
As long as they keep having those great pool parties I will survive.

Royal carribean have just announced to their crews that they will be suspending operations for 30 days.
Not sure if it also includes their subsidiaries such as silversea.

Includes them all as Celebrity is caught up as well. The President ordered them to do it. Probably because they were so slow to follow Princess Lead. NCL as well as another line.

I hope that the passengers will be quickly disembarked rather than allow another Diamond Princess fiasco to develop.

They will.A granddaughter is working on a RCL ship now heading for New Orleans. At this point the crew have been told they must stay on board.

Canada is banning all Cruise Ships with more then 500 crew and passengers until July 2020.

We have a Celebrity Cruise booked for May, Honolulu to Vancouver. Intend on cancelling/putting
on hold anyway closer to the date.

We nearly booked Sapphire Princess May 1 - 10 from Fremantle. So glad that in the end Mrs SS had second thoughts. We would have probably ended up with non-refundable Sydney - Perth return tickets. The refund from Princess for the cruise would have been little consolation as we would still have been at least 1k out of pocket on the air fares.
