Cruising choices with an active Pandemic

Well at least 3 other ships cruising South America had at least 1 passenger with Covid 19 positive tests.
Although it is a world cruise passengers do join at several ports around the world.
We also have no idea of the origins of the passengers. It is an Italian ship and the world cruise began in Italy.
There are many large groups of Chinese cruisers now and Antarctica and Southern Chile are very popular with them.
So endless possibilities.

But I do not like the description of 250-300 passengers with respiratory symptoms.

This isn't a view you see from your front window every day! Seems they've got to park those empty ships somewhere. Radiance of the Seas off the coast of Wollongong pictured.

"Some of the international cruise ships caught up the Australian government's new ban - which prevents them from docking in Australia for the next 30 days - will take refuge at Port Kembla.
Already, the Royal Caribbean ship Radiance of the Sea has taken up a berth at the port while it waits out the government's restrictions.

Wollongong councillor Leigh Colacino, in his capacity as chair of Cruise Wollongong said Port Kembla had 11 berths available to host cruise ships during the ban.

"There are no passengers on there, and the crew stay on ship during this time, they do not come ashore," he said.
"Radiance is there now, and I think there will be more on the horizon."
Passengers due to set sail on the ship disembarked over the weekend, he said.
Cr Colacino said the cruise ship docking program was a sign of the strong relationship between the cruise industry and the port.
"I think it's great that Port Kembla can offer this," he said.

"They know because of the work we've done over the past few years that Port Kembla is a safe port, they will be safe for as long as they need to be held there.
"This is our time to give back to the cruise lines in their time of need.
"These ships have to be anchored somewhere around the world at this time.
"This was the first ship to come in to the port, and now it's the first one we've been able to help."
Around Australia, cruise ships have been called back to ports and passengers have had to cancel their trips after the 30-day ban came into place over the weekend.
Royal Caribbean has frozen its entire fleet worldwide until April 11, and most other cruise lines have similar freezes in place.
Wollongong's Michael Silva had boarded the Radiance of the Seas at Circular Quay at noon on Saturday, for a cruise he'd been looking forward to for a year.
"At 3.30pm I got a Facebook message saying all cruise ships would not be allowed into New Zealand," Mr Silva said.
"That was when I started freaking out. Then the captain announced over the speaker that everyone must get off by midnight, or stay the night and get off the next day via lifeboats."
The ship had to leave Circular Quay and moor off the coast because another vessel was due to enter the port.
Mr Silva chose to stay on board to enjoy at least one night on the ship, to "eat up and drink up".
He said Royal Carribean had offered either a 125 per cent credit or a 100 per cent refund - and he took the latter.
Still, it's left him feeling very disappointed and is now considering cutting his holidays short and heading back to work.
"It was very disappointing, but the crew handled it really, really well," he said."
And then there were 4.

This may be the death knell for cruising - covid19 can survive for 17 days in a cabin :eek:

Apparently it quite likes stainless steel?

In fact the Diamond Princess might be remembered as a cause for optimism in the cruise industry.Despite acknowledged poor handling of the situation by the authorities in an environment conducive to the spread of the virus just under 20% became infected.
As well although a demographic that was at very high risk of severe disease and death the mortality rate is just over 1% which is a lot lower than most predictions.

Of course if Covid 19 can survive for 17 days in a cabin on a berthed ship why not in the hotel room that is close to the dock?

Magnifica off WA now claiming everyone well, and only seeking fuel and supplies.

But . They let off 240 people in Melbourne last Thursday.

Sydney's Princess disaster now has 100+ confirmed infected, most of whom spent 1-2 days not self-isolating

This added 50 to the NSW numbers.
Without this would have been under 100 new cases which is below the exponential predictions

I'm not aware of any testing about this, are you? But I'm concerned.

😂 Yes the marketing spin will be 'come on a cruise, there's an 80% chance you won't get sick! And 99 out of 100 people don't die!'

Sans passengers.. Silver Whisper is due to dock in Freo on wed evening.
One assumes just loading fuel & food , she is apparently bound for Cape town and then Gibraltar.

NSW press conference live now on ABC24 saying that on the Ruby Princess final cruise, disembarked pax now suffering symptoms were exposed onboard by contact initiating with a crew member who was unaware s/he had covid19  Pax did not board the final cruise already infected. The speaker is confident about that, but could be cough covering for NSW govt failures. (Back-to-back cruiser numbers from penultimate to final cruise not mentioned.)

Clarity is not assisted by the media mixing up the penultimate cruise infection numbers with the final cruise infection numbers

What were the numbers from penultimate?
I thought everything was from the final cruise?

On cruise critic someone is doing a review just returned from Ruby. They are in the US. Their cruise started 8 March. Not sure how long their cruise was for but they mentioned they had a late embarkation due to infection treatment. They travelled to NZ. Im not sure they are even aware of potential issues of the last cruise into Sydney. They should be under quarantine (or is that isolation?) but they've made no mention of that so far.

And now someone has posted who was on the cruise before, disembarking on the 8th.

I see the Queen Elizabeth is still floating around off Gladstone. Left Syd on 16th and has been showing as "awaiting orders"

I really dislike cruise critic sometimes! Any posts on that thread relating to Ruby Princess and Covid and the subsequent death and debacle of that cruise have been deleted! Good ole USA strikes again. Covid is a myth!

AFAIK there were 158 cases of respiratory symptoms on the penultimate. Not sure how that translates into positive covid19 tests, partly I am sure because govts are scrambling to blame anyone other than themselves and therefore they are fudging.

This story from a few days ago mentions the 158 cases logged as at 8 March which I believe was turnaround day between penultimate and final cruise: Ruby Princess logged 158 cases of illness before passengers disembarked without coronavirus testing

A small crumb of hopefulness - although the CDC found covid19 surviving in cabins after 17 days, they have not established that it was capable of transmitting the illness after that time. (But, wiping the crumb away, neither have they established that it wasn't).

Re the Qld man who died yesterday. Most media are reporting he was on a 'Royal Caribbean' ship. After some ferreting I found SBS saying it was Voyager of the Seas :(
