Current best option for annual travel insurance

Maybe they have changed it but likely I have mixed them up with other policies but as we do 7-8 week trips 38 days is still not suitable for us.

I know. We do baby trips compared with your epics. That will change in the coming years.

Sorry travelinsurancedirect.com.au. Those prices are for annual multi trip. Good value IMHO

Probably been said before, but why waste money on a paid extra insurance when CC insurance provides good coverage unless you have special personal circumstances.

Skiing for me. Also the points use and triggering. Apart from the ANZ most others have relatively hard to attain actvation clauses if you are using points for the flights. Higher limits for some things.

It does depend on the specific card, but the westpac ones only require $500 per person plus return tickets from Australia ( paid or FF tickets are fine), plus you can take out extra cover with the specific company for special medical conditions and special extras. But YMMV of course. My Earth Black insurance paid out over $32K for knee injury in Vienna last Xmas with no qualms.

But it's important to study the specific T&Cs.

The Amex velocity plat will cover for flights booked using the velocity points or buying SQ for example .

Just received an email from dodo advising they are getting into the travel insurance game.

Just did a dummy quote for my trip From Jan 29 to Feb 14 in Taiwan Thailand Malaysia and the cost was a bit cheaper than TID.

Cost for adding snow sports cover was similar to TID

They are offering 10% discount till end Jan 2016 - Travel*10 - and it's case sensitive

PDS available via https://ecommerce.disconline.com.au/branding/resources/EXDD/legal/travel/PDSA.pdf

They are getting the coverage via auto and general.

Below pricing for my upcoming trip is without the discount.

I have the NAB Velocity premium card which for $150 is like having an annual travel policy as you just need to spend $500 on tavel costs for the coverage to kick in, so it's great for free insurance when using FF points for the flights.

That is a good discount code, would bring my annual to $438.

Below is a table I saw in Choice mag about a year ago. It has an interesting table on FOS complaints and their resolution. Alliance has the fewest disputes and a high 'resolved by mutual consent' rating :

The FOS complaints table below shows the number of disputes they've received per 100,000 policies for a particular Financial Services Provider (FSP). We've listed the name of each insurer's FSP in our travel insurance comparison table so you can look them up in the FOS complaints table to see how likely consumers were to bring a travel insurance dispute to FOS about them in 2013-14.

Not sure if this has been quoted before, but Choice has some good articles on Travel Insurance, especially the points about claims and alcohol consumption and claims, plus it gives a comparison of policies.

Looking at renewing insurance and noticed our annual policy has gone up $100 with TID

Your age can affect the annual fee quite a bit. I now pay almost double from 2 years ago for our annual policy. I did check a couple of others but stayed with TID

I'm going to start looking closely at the card insurances as I mainly have it for the car excess cover. Seems my Westpac platinum business Visa covers up to $5k (from memory) which is considerably better than TID and to be honest, the amount TID has risen in the past few years, really prices themselves out of the market for me. I only renewed last time because I procrastinated too much and ran out of time to do much research. I intend to ensure I don't do the same this year!

Only 29 so shouldn't of been an age bracket change

Surprisingly I found Australia Post insurance to be reasonable (and they pay out on claims), as is 1cover (underwritten by allianz).
TID has burnt us twice, not paying out on claims both big and small.
I organised 1cover for my mum (50) as an annual policy to the USA and Russia and it was a lot cheaper than others.
Plus trips are covered for 90 days at a time, rather than the 30-38 offered by most others that I've found.

But as with all things, it depends on circumstance which is best

Thanks for those comments Caito. I was looking at Aust Post. So you have experience with making claims with them? Without going into personal details, what specifically was your experience?
