Current Qantas First Lounge Menu (SYD/MEL) and relevant topics

Looks like the daily specials, AKA "Market Inspirations", has bitten the dust. :(

A nice Flounge session yesterday on a busy Sunday morning. Nestor was on the door and I told him a holiday doesn’t start until we’ve walked through the frosted glass doors and been greeted by him. Service was very good and Mrs Rugby worked her magic and got us both day spa treatments, after missing out on the last two visits. We didn’t try The Lane Cab Sauv in the decanter, we instead started with the excellent Leo Buring ‘Leopold’ Riesling 2015, and then Fowles Wine ‘The Rule’ Shiraz 2015 with the cheese plate - a great wine.

Also spotted Flounging were new Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marise Payne and Telstra CFO/Tesla board member Robyn Denholm.

Ate at SYD F lounge yesterday and basically meh.

I arrived kust after 0800 and had my spa appointment at 0900 so a quick meal was in order.

Had my usual eggs benedict with ham and whilst tasty the service was poor.
I was seated in a good seat and the cutlery from the other side was taken. But I didn't have a fork. Not noticed.

When the food arrived it was a dump and run effort with no chance to ask for a fork. It took a couple of minutes to get a fork.

Ate my meal and went to the spa. The new facial treatment was quite enjoyable and better than previous versions. I believe that SYD and MEL have different male facial treatments, I do hope the SYD version is rolled out to both lounges.

After my spa I wanted to have some sourdough toast and Vegemite and went to the restaurant area near the spa. It was full and I was referred to the other restaurant area which was also full. I noted that I was happy to eat in the lounge area and that I only wanted toast and a fruit energiser smoothie.

They found me a seat and the meal was delivered in as requested. Better than the first effort.

Upon arrival Nestor greeted me and I mentioned how many of us enjoy his service and comment on it positively. He seemed quite pleased. Upon departure I saw him thanking guests and shaking their hands as he did with me.

Nestor does the arrival and departure to a high five star standard, now just need to get the wait staff up to that standard.

While I’m always well looked after in SYD I have been most impressed with the lift in MEL standards - both food and service. Hernata (sp?), who I’ve only seen a couple of times about two months prior greeted me like an old friend, remembered my drink, wine and other preferences. He and Val looked after me very well. I now look forward to the food in MEL whereas about a year ago I always found SYD better.

This is the barramundi from my recent visit.

Indeed Nestor is a great asset for Qantas and I wish everyone at the First Class(!) lounge would deliver customer service at his standard.

Breaking news!

Earlier this week Qantas dropped Taittinger from its Melbourne F lounge wine list. Unnamed sources said it was to make more room for more Qantas Cool-Aid, but this has yet to be confirmed. AFF member and frequent F lounge visitor JessicaTam was interrupted from her rocking back and forth in the foetal position to say "I had just got used to not being able to have Delamotte, and now they take away Taittinger! What next - will we have to buy something in duty free to drink?"

Prudence and Bartholomew Cuthbertson-Smythe from Brighton were overheard arguing what to drink from the remaining champagne on the menu. "I am not going to drink anything that reminds me of your mother" said Bartholomew. "And I am not going to have anything that sounds like that simply ghastly aftershave your brother gave you when we launched the second yacht", replied Prudence.

A Qantas spokesperson stated that it was due to a change in policy. Soon they would RSA all visitors to the lounge on arrival, so would not need to keep any alcohol. Taittinger was just the one they ran out of first.

(not) from the QF Media Team:

"In an effort to reflect a global company, and after listening to our Chairman's Lounge members in a survey this week, we will introduce sparkling wines from around the world. The English sparkling wine Bolney Wine Estate’s Vintage Blanc de Blancs served on our beloved oneworld partner British Airways will soon be flowing in full abundance in our flagship Sydney and Melbourne First Lounges. We look forward to matching this with a Neil Perry inspired menu."

In another news release from Qantas, their RSA officer has been advised their duties will include danger money because they are now required to advise designated customers that some specific kinds of expensive plonk will no be longer served. :p
