Bring two back next time, and another two after that.
Sounds like a good idea based on following information.

Say your 5 pack of 50gm cost $60.

Then the Excise on each 50gm pack is $21.81, GST on the excise is $2.18 and GST on the product is $1.20 - total payable per Packet is $25.19.
Each one can be bought for around $30-$35 retail and a 5 pack costs $70 duty free. So the duty + excise + duty free cost is > retail cost? Something is wrong here.

Take all five through and declare them and you'll be up for another $126.
Is that including the duty free allowance + what is allowable per person as "personal use"?

This new rule is a joke. Our whole duty free is a joke. I purchased a 1L bottle of Smirnoff Vodka red when I arrived in Thailand at 410 THB = AUD12.81....

Not wrong - apparent Sydney Duty Free has to pay high rents to Sydney Airport ... if the retail cost is $35 and duty and GST on Duty is $24 then the non government cost is only $10 (there's $1 GST in the $35). Conceivably Sydney Duty free could sell a 5 pack for $50 without taking the MAQ rent into account.

If you exceed the 'personal use' allowance you pay Excise & GST on the entire amount. (duty free concession)

Autralian Duty free is almost a monopoly - only ADL gives a little freedom from the Nuance ggroup.

So SYD Duty free is making a killing. Not surprising.

No intention to exceed. I have been let through in the past with twice the duty free allowance.

It would be nice to know any recent experiences and whether it is worth risking declaring 3/5 pouches and whether they are likely to collect duty or not. That being said though I will more than likely leave the remainder in Thailand and bring back them back next time. Dad has more than enough to last a long time.

And I still find the decision of SYD duty free to sell tobacco above allowable duty free limits a sneaky and totally dishonest practice.

Folks just arrived from KUL into BNE tonight. Apparently the BNE customs were really lacklustre tonight and couldn't care, so they asked the standard questions - didn't ask for anything to be opened (Mum and Dad had plenty of food with them) - pretty much just got waved through.

Back on topic, Dad had 5 packets with him, but he ticked "No" on the incoming passenger form where you need to declare the excess.

He's now safe and sound asleep - he didn't get pulled up at all.

Kids - don't try this at home. He got lucky this time. Had he been pulled up, I'd probably have to extricate him after being charged for making a false declaration and attempting to conceal.
