Cutting in on security lines

Sydney premium security lane yesterday afternoon. Queue actually longer than the standard lanes. The guy in front of me starts drifting right as we get closer to the front. He's gripped by indecision on diving for another lane or staying put. He ends up in no man's land dithering.
Woman in front of him is now in front of me. She is on a call. Puts her 3 bags on the rollers then grabs a tray and moves to the belt and proceeds to have some sort of convulsion while trying to take her coat without removing her phone from her ear.
At this point I grabbed a tray for my notebook and placed it and my bag in the large gap between her encamp. She looked at me. Picked up her tray and was kind enough to let me through.
Sometimes we make simple things so complicated.

Ive moved in front of people at security with just a simple "excuse me" and I go around them.

They are just standing there doing whatever while I have my trays and are ready to go.

If they are pissed by it, I dont make eye contact to notice but Im especially nice to the security staff so they like me at least.

That's the way it should be ......!

On the flip side some find its tied in with their personal pride not letting anyone thru! My last flight for example , I quickly upset the person sitting in C while I was sitting in A. My phone jack was US ( unserviceable) so I used the empty B seat ( no person sitting ) middle seat jack.
Wow ...... The guy freaked out .... Like what was I doing.....? Person told me to get out like huge intrusion. The spot was empty much like a shadow seat. Just so it's clear I was just using the jack and not moving to sit in B.

Anyway just my reflections on human behaviour- weirdest compilation

I hate queue jumping with a passion, but having said that, I'm pretty relaxed by nature. For better or worse if someone cuts in front of me I usually assume its because they are late/on call. If someone is dithering in front of me I'll just casually keep moving along and bypass them.

 Seriously!? Sounds like he has a highly over-inflated sense of self-importance!

Same here - and if I know that I have several things to unpack, I'll deliberately stand out the way while loading the tray and tell the people behind me to jump in front to keep things moving.....

If on Qantas that's a bit of a difficult one from the A or F seat as the B/E headphone jack is in the arm adjacent to the C/D seats. But U/S headphone jack seem reasonable to use an alternative. (at least in row 4, 737)

I will often use the B/E headphone jack when seated in the C/D seats, if empty. It's just gives me a little bit more room. I have had one person tell me that I was using the wrong one, once. I'm sure my face might have been a window to my soul, which was saying "yeah, ok".

Worst experience I had with people cutting in security line was at the Shenzhen border crossing into Hong Kong. The whole bus tour group formed a congo line and pushed their way through an existing queue using their arms and luggages. There were a number of security guards with machine guns standing around the immigration booths but they just looked and ignored the whole thing! That was before my god-send APEC card.

Reading JohnK's post he only has a laptop and jacket to put in the trays. He is an experienced traveller and would have a well rehearsed procedure so any wait would be minimal.
so I think some of those posts aimed at him are a bit over the top.
As I said previously I will have everything out and it merely requires putting down in a tray. Not delaying anyone but have still had people trying to cut in usually going past several others in the line. Not on unless you are on a plane already boarding and let people know. Also as I know I will hold the line up with my knee if only a couple of people behind I will ask them to go through first.

just to be clear "my post" is not aimed at anyone in particular, just my observations, and I agree with JohnK on many a topic.

When it comes to airport security the queue ends at the roller belt. Once you've got there it's first through best dressed as far as I'm concerned.

Oh yeah that's happened several times, just goes to show how one learns little neat tricks on the way( many flights).

One trick I had to learn, recently, was my duty in C/D seat to put out the B/E tray table to share with the window seat person.

Oh yes I do this too, makes complete sense.

I also try and use the extra cooling opportunity when the vents are unused on hot summer days.

Most are not interested.

Oops just noticed complete OT

I respectfully disagree. If someone is faffing about at the start of the roller belt, a bypass is fine. But if it is a tray or so between them and the person in front or the proper belt is actually in use, they I would find that behaviour extremely rude and would call them on it.

Interested in the opinions of the brains trust here... picture this scenario...
DYKWIA cuts in front of two people (myself and SWMBO) in the premium security line in SYD, says "can I just cut in here", I respond "no you can return to the back of the line", SWMBO tells me after it was C bomb behaviour on my behalf.

My thoughts are as follows:
1. What gives you priority over someone already in line?
2. If you are running late, is jumping ahead 2 people going to really make a difference?
3. Is it my problem?

Maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age and should listen to SWMBO...

Thoughts? And hold back on the personal abuse if you will ;)

He would have arrived at wherever at exactly the same time as you....what a moron, would make no difference. I would have let him in and muttered "ars$$$$e under my breath but guess that is not the right thing, after all he probably was a very important person ( in his own lunchbox )

Most inconsiderate of him , if you had let him in

I have misunderstood and not read properly, I thought you were at loading

If at security I reckon it depends, if someone is polite and explains their flight is closing etc and it does not delay mine that I reckon in hindsight I would agree but if they demanded then "No way Jose !"

Some roller belts only let a small gap ( one tray only). They can be very short. Not really long like Melbourne !

Harking back to the original post, I recall an experience in OOL not too long ago where I was waiting in the security line and the couple in front of me were faffing around to the point there was a really big gap ahead (if busy the space could have been filled by say 5 or 6 people). As I was on the ball, I simply grabbed a tray and put my items in and headed in front of them without thinking about it. They took HUGE offence and called me out on it so I gave them their space back, despite the fact I was almost ready to walk through the scanner by that stage. I didn't see them in the lounge, I felt better after that :p

My actions weren't to cause distress, I was just keeping the line moving while they were holding it up, by moving around them, which I think is fair. If they had been as on the ball as I was, there would have been no need. I don't see it as rude, but can see how they thought of it that way, that I was pushing in. But it's just a security line ;)
