I can still find CX availability CNS-HKG return in Sept 10 on QFF ... A lot of the award seats have gone since I booked my award redemption last week ...

Yeah, I can see BNE-HKG (for example) on CX still available - but some particular routes I was checking last week are no longer available... even though pretty much every flight on the day was open for awards.

So things are not the same as they were a few days ago.

One wonders what is going on !

As a side note my redemption booking has not ticketed from 5 days ago. Will have to call Qantas and find out why ?

Had the award booking ticketed then called Cathay Pacific to book seats. They told me that I cannot pre-book seats and have to wait until check-in - even though I am a OWE !!

I believe you've been told incorrect information by the Cathay Staffer. Choose your seat yourself online - it's fairly simple.

From Your Bookings on the Qantas website, note the "Booking Reference" for your booking.
Access www.checkmytrip.com and plug in the "booking reference" and your surname.

Note the Cathay Pacific reference in the booking - it will look like:
Airline confirmation number(s): Cathay Pacific xx_XX

Go to "Manage my Booking" on the Cathay Website:
Retrieve Your International Flight Booking Information - Cathay Pacific

Use the "non-member" login, and plug in your Cathay reference and first/last names.

When the booking displays, select "service requests", "seat". You should be able to then select seats for your booking using the update functionality.

It worked for me on a Qantas Y ff redemption on Cathay very recently (and still is working now). As a WP, you should have access to that functionality.

Note, I believe some seats are still blocked from being selected, but visibility is pretty good.

As Mal has mentioned try allocating the seats online.

I have been able to allocate business class seats online on CX recently and hope I can do the same for economy seats as well....

Thanks Mal / JohnK, I tried booking the seat online but had the following message:

"Seat request service will be available from 180 days before departure. Please try again later."

Underneath my seat number / preference was the following note:

"* The following passengers can request a seat in advance
- Members of The Marco Polo Club and oneworld alliance holding elite status
- All First and Business Class passengers
- Passengers holding tickets on eligible fare types – Y, B, H, K, L, M, V "

So that is why I tried to call them but was told I could not allocate seating. I will try again online 180 days from departure ...

Cheers
Mark

I tried your step by step instructions Mal but when I entered my QF PNR into CMT , it says Airline confirmation number(s): Qantas Airways xx_xx_

Anyway fwiw my booking is from a dONE4 on an AA (001) ticket.

Call (or email CX) in OZ with your Fight details, name and (001-) ticket number and request the CX booking reference.

As far as 6 months goes, this is correct. CX have not IME allowed seat preallocation before then.

I too found availability gone for intra-asia flights. Couple of weeks ago every single flight TPE-HKG-BKK was open in biz class - now message comes up 'there are no awards for all May for this route' (or words something like that).

I called QF a couple days ago and they confirmed the availability was still there.

The agent told me the introduction of CX to the system was a 'soft launch' and availability should show back up on-line at some time.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that following Serfty's advice would be the only way to get the CX reference. The issue is caused because only a subset of your DONE4 ticket is exported into Amadeus from AA's SABRE booking system. It doesn't include the Cathay reference, but could show the flight/s if they are adjoining a flight on Qantas/BA/Finnair or any of the other oneworld airlines that use Amadeus.
