I have a friend who is a QF Silver flying CX J from Hong Kong to Australia -

1. Which lounges can they access?

2. Which lounge would you recommend that they use?

Thanks

The Bridge, The Cabin, The Pier, The Wing, G16 and QF.

Haven't been to any of them yet so I'll let the others recommend the best ones.

Flying CX J they can access any oneworld business class lounge - that's all the CX ones, the KA (G16) one and the Qantas 'Hong Kong' lounge.

The new CX Pier business lounge is supposed to be the best of the lot - equivalent to First class of any other airlines' lounges.

Otherwise the QF lounge is good. I've done a 180 on this recently. With the exception of champagne (not available in QF), the rest of the QF lounge is now better than than anything CX provides. Better food, nice bar.

I alternate between CX - The Wing and QF lounge... the QF lounge opens later in the morning and is tucked away and not easy to find the first time

Depends a bit on which gate will be used. I agree that QF and the Wing are both good if the gate is in that area, otherwise it's the Pier. The Cabin I can take or leave (usually the latter).

The new Pier J opened mid June and is fabulous. By all means check out the other lounges, but I would aim to spend the most time there.

I would rate them in this order:

The Pier
Qantas Lounge
The Wing
The Bridge
The Cabin
G16

A timely thread as we've got an upcoming transit in HKG in Oct from 1800 until 0030 (QF97 to CX888) and were pondering what lounge(s) to visit.

I haven't been to HKG since June 1997 and SO has never been so I was thinking we should head into the city for a couple of hours to check it out but not sure what places to visit in the timeframe.

We would also need to collect our luggage ex QF27 and recheck for CX888 as I wasn't able to book a multi city award with mixed class flights (QF27 in whY & CX888 in J) on the same ticket which would have allowed us to through check the bags from BNE to YVR. I kept getting an error so the only way to book it was two separate classic awards.

Two months ago the cabin was undergoing renovations. Part of the lounge was closed and the remaining space was filled to capacity. Not pleasant, not a spare seat (although the crowding should be relieved by the new Pier lounge now open).

I would rate them in this order:

The Pier
Qantas Lounge
The Wing
The Bridge
The Cabin
G16

Agree entirely with that ranking!

The logistics... land at 1800 should have you at baggage collection by about 1830 and rechecked at 1900 at the latest - probably a bit earlier. Train to Kowloon or Central takes another 30 mins - so say 19.30. You'd need to turn around and head back to the airport by 2230 at the latest (arriving 2300, then time for immigration control).

You could either go to one of the night markets on the TST side (exit Kowloon station) or you could head to central. That time (3 hours) would give you the choice of either going to the Peak, or, the Star Ferry + tram combo (travel from central to say wan chai or Causeway bay before turning around), or just wander around the shops and restaurants of Central and mid-levels. If it is warm or humid you might want to leave 30 minutes earlier from Central back to the airport to allow time for a shower.

Another thing to add in... as you are on separate tickets you will have paid the airport departure tax. you are entitled to this back for a same day departure. Leaving at 0030 might invalidate that. But if you stay airside only you should be able to collect it back.

Pier and QF lounge for me as well. I don't bother with the rest these days! It's good that QF and Pier are miles apart as well which covers all gates depending where you are leaving from.

As a QF Platinum you will have access to CX F lounges which changes that order completely.
I would rate them in this order if you have access to F lounges:
The Wing F
The Pier F

Qantas Lounge (distant third)
The rest

Unless they have 3-4 hours to spare then go to the lounge nearest the departure gate.

You havea lot of time up your sleeve. Enough time to try all the lounges and then form your own opinion.

My preference is western style food over noodles and curries so the Wing F lounge buffet is perfect. The other day they had slow cooked pork shoulder which melted as soon as it hit the mouth.

I also love to sit in QF lounge and have a couple of Pure Blondes especially when lounge is not busy like the other day.

The CX business lounges are just that. CX business lounges. The food is almost the same in all lounges.
