That's just complete and utter baloonery. It's a phrase that gets repeated over and over in the industry to validate some coughty move they're doing to their wines, and honestly paints a terrible picture of the overall Chinese consumer. Yes, they do heavily favour icon brands, mainly because those big brands were the first movers into their market, so there is a strong association there. Perhaps similar to here how we call portable coolers "eskys" or "band-aid" for adhesive bandages, their recognition of red wine started with '82 Lafite which had a presence in many 90's HK films. So, it's just going to take time for the market there to mature.Quote: ""We tweak the wine style to meet the Chinese consumer," Mr Grundel said."
And yet every wine I've tasted for the China market has been.... unrefined cough. Where's your proof? They're not exporting the same wine under the same label to China most of the time."We tweak our business model to meet the Chinese market", is a more accurate statement.

That’s biggest load of rubbish I have ever read! Enlighten the forum as to exactly how many times you have been to China in last 20 years and how many Australian wines you have had there? And yet every wine I've tasted for the China market has been.... unrefined cough. I still remember my first trip to Beijing and the wonder about how much more expensive everything was there, until a local explained to me that the same quality exists across different shopping centres and only the price varies according to how well off people want to appear, which dictates where they shop.Translation: “We increase the price x10 to make our sh**y wine more attractive to the Chinese consumer.”
Clearly we both have very strong opinions on this so I'm not respectfully not going to bite. I've never been to China, have refused to set foot there for a very long time. I said wine FOR China, not IN China. That’s biggest load of rubbish I have ever read!
