Sam Kim:
Thompson Estate
Chardonnay 2022
Rating: 95
Complex and inviting, the bouquet shows ripe stone fruit, rockmelon, nougat and assorted nut aromas, followed by a generously expressed palate delivering creamy texture combined with bright acidity, finishing long and expansive. Gorgeously styled and complex, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2032. $55.00. www.thompsonestate.com. Oct 2023.
Thanks RB - I have had this before via Vinomofo (2020 at $25) and thought it was one of the best MR Chardonnays that I have had. It was a different vintage - will go in for a dozen.

Cheaper than the $39.90 a bottle at VM.

Any experience with this vintage. Why are they flogging it off everywhere?

2017 was a cold, rainy vintage where most wineries struggled to get enough ripeness in their grapes. There are some good wines from the vintage, but they are the exception not the rule.

It has been mentioned that Langtons rate 2017 an 8/10 for Cabernet, but those vintage charts are mystifyingly divorced from what I would consider the consensus of winemakers and drinkers - at least for WA.

2018, widely considered to be one of the greatest MR vintages ever, is rated an 8/10 on that chart - and 2016 a very competent, perhaps great vintage is rated as a 7. Both of these vintages are so much better than 2017 it boggles the mind how they could be rated equal or lower. 2014 which has proved to be an exceptional vintage, with Cabernets that age into ethereal but powerful wines is rated as a 7, and 2013 which is as green as MR gets is rated a 9 out of 10 - widely considered to be a troubled vintage which is reflected in the glass.

I've no idea how they land on these scores, but I don't put much stock in these vintage charts.

Cellar One appear to have a sitewide sale offering 20% off spend of $299 or more. 12 bottles of 2020 Grant Burge Filsell shiraz for $297.60, or $24.80 per bottle including shipping. Or could grab 6 bottles of 2018 St Hallett Old Block shiraz (screwcap) for $427.20, or $71.20 per bottle.

For those sitting on credits, could be a good way to spend them. PM me if you need access to the site.

Might be nothing more than clearing out for later vintages and the glut. I've picked up this one from 'good' vintages for this price in the past on clearance

Thanks. I've been reading various reviews on vintages down MR and many suggest it was a good season all up. Having said that, the reviews suggest each year is strong 🤔

... and others have pointed out, it's patchy and it's not as if good wines suddenly become rubbish in more difficult conditions. It may even be that the good winermakers take more care when things aren't perfect

I have Voyager Cabs from 2017 and they are beautiful wines.
Hmm, maybe I had a dud. I bought a 6 pack of 2017 Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and when we opened one, it was simply undrinkable.
Sent the rest (5) to the auction.
