Is it just me or have Penfolds prices gone through the roof in the last decade?
I can't think of any other range that has gone up that much including Wynns.

The TWE cellardoor.co prices on premium stuff is no bargain. In fact, they don't really seem to have much premium stuff available at the moment. All the emails are pushing the lower end wines these days. My purchasing from TWE has really dropped off in the last few years via this site (and in general).

As for 707. I don't know why anyone would pay the asking price. It just isn't that good. Much better options both Australian and Bordeaux for half the asking price.
 
Yes Daver6 I haven't bought 707 at these new prices. So it has been Diana here and Silver Oak over in LOTFAP (just to please my cardiologist).

You're right, Penfolds prices have increased a lot in the last decade. But I don't agree that they are on their own with this.

I'd suggest you have a look at the prices for Mount Pleasant wines, which I think have increased even more over the same time period.

As just one example – The Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz is currently around $240 a bottle (https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_551812/mount-pleasant-maurice-o-shea-shiraz-2014). I know I have purchased the same wine for under $50 within the last 7 years.

Any of the big guns from Margaret River for starters. Eg, Cullen, Moss Wood etc. Even paying $250 for Cloudburst is better value. If you want to consider Bordeaux, for example just picked up some Pontet Canet for under $250/bottle.

Looking back at some other recentish Bordeaux purchases for decent vintages:

2009 Château Brane-Cantenac $170
2010 Château Latour à Pomerol $126
2009 Les Forts de Latour (magnum) $800
2009 Château Smith Haut Lafitte $200
2010 Château Talbot $162

I consider these all at least on par with 707 and some significantly better.
 
If we were to buy 707 we might have to back order the Gulfstream.
Unfortunately my taste buds are tuned into 707.
Maybe when the TWE Chinese customers switch off we can get some realistic pricing.

Surgery to re-tune those taste buds might be the cheaper alternative :)
 
May drink the Grange instead of surgery. I have quite a few from when it was about $200 a bottle. I drank all the 1990 Hill Of Grace because I could.
 
The Langton's $5 auctions are getting pretty active lately, especially since Xmas! Lots of last minute (literally) bidders and people willing to pay towards the higher end (compared to usual). Even bottles going for more than the Langton's retail rate. I've been putting in some reasonable bids and coming up dry lately. Weird too, given the heat

I was bidding on 29 lots and won 4 of those 29 lots this evening. I was really only after 8, and got pipped on 4 at the last 20 seconds. One of my wins was the Parker First Growth 98, which I got for $74 plus BPA, which is a pretty decent price.

AC watches and then bids in the last few minutes picking off the bargains where there is no bidding frenzy. He's had some good ones recently.

I agree. It was pretty tough on the bidding front tonight.

surely they dont expect the rest of Australia amex offers to fly in to make instore purchases... lol
