I remember reading on another forum that MWG had more sophisticated processes on checking referral vouchers than other merchants.

I am not aware of any. But I imagine there will be.

The only other bit I know is the CR one will be an 'all day' event, whilst the SB will be a 'flash sale'.

I generally like them 5+ years after release, they'll be good for another 20+ years. If you're buying a few, you can do worse than trying one to see how you like it.

Agree, at least 5yrs. We're drinking the 2012 at the mo and it's perfect. Halliday reckons the 2017 will be good til 2047, so using the rule of thirds it would be prime from 2027-2037.

This is something they do selectively. I suspect too many ordered this particular vintage using referral codes, meaning they lost or didn’t make any profit on what is clearly a popular wine that would sell out anyway.

I just picked one up in the sales, but noticed the cap is loose and wondering if the seal will be ok. the design looks like it may allow movement around 10-15 degrees and has a sort of protrusion that will break the seal if moved any further. Can anyone verify?

I might be wrong, but it looks like it may be a VinoLok? So that is not actually the seal but just the 'cap' you are seeing movement in. VinoLok are a glass stopper. I have the Henschke Johanns Garden that has them.

Glass became a viable option with the launch of Vinolok in 2003, now owned by Czech glass company Preciosa. The striking design comprises an O-ring made from an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer resin, which is also used in dairy and meat packaging, encased in a protective aluminium sheath. It’s popular in Austria and Germany, and Henschke was the first Australian producer to adopt it.

Following initial trials in 2004 assessing how reds would develop, 10 years of data has convinced Stephen Henschke he did the right thing. There is no bottle variation, no need for a corkscrew and Stephen likens Vinolok to a magnum – it facilitates a slower rate of ageing. Importantly, the flagship Hill of Grace, plus Mount Edelstone and the cabernet blend Cyril Henschke are under Vinolok, but only for export markets – due to the acceptance of screwcap in Australia, the aforementioned wines are sold under that closure here.

Some have questioned the durability of the O-ring and whether there will be any chemical reaction between it and the wine, although there’s no evidence to date. The main barrier is the cost. Vinolok is relatively expensive – in Australia well over $2.
