Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Re: Dan Murphy's Secret Selection Coonawarra Merlot

I knew it's probably Dolan after I ordered but before delivery.
It's going to be I am glad I got it wrong or I should confirmed the identity first.
Let's see what Two-time Jimmy Watson's winner, Nigel Dolan have in store for us. ;)

Tried one last night. Not sold on the aftertaste with my first glass, but putting it through an aerator definitely helped with the second glass. For the price paid ($14?), and given it's partially aged, happy with the purchase.

Edit: Tried the rest of the bottle last night. Had taken a turn for the worse with taste flatter and more acidic flavours coming through. If this is typical of the wine then I wouldn't recommend keeping this open for more than a night

Hi all,

I got send this from Wine Direct yesterday. I am not usually the biggest fan of Merlot, but this looks pretty special. Has anyone had the 2009 Irvine Grand Merlot before? Getting a free bottle of $130 Merlot seems pretty good?

FREE IRVINE GRAND MERLOT

Anyone got an idea?

I got this offer yesterday too. Whilst I do like a Merlot, I don't know this one. $130?? It would want to be something special to put it nicely. I clicked delete for bait advertising. YMMV.

twelve g noirs to get a free gm ..sounds good to me. in fact maybe even ridiculous

Yeah, I'm not too sure. That being said though, I could quite comfortably make up a dozen of things I like and give it a try. I just wanted to know if it was more of a throw in the cellar or enjoy as an experience over the weekend

Yes, that's a lot of money for what is (on the JH scale) an average wine.

I'm not discrediting the great JH. But I'm sick to death of everyone hanging on his every word. I judge flights for a magazine periodically and I would hate for someone to turn their nose up at a wine that I judged less than 95 points. I'm going to buy one and make my own mind up I think. He is a wise man, but he is not God.

Not disagreeing with you one bit. But when it's $130/bottle, I tend to be risk adverse, and would expect high(er) scores from leading reviewers - especially given the other wines I could spend $130 on.

Now, if it were $20-30 for a bottle - whole different story!

To be honest, I have a feeling that there's a reason why it's being given away, and I suspect that it doesn't match up to other $100+ merlots.

I'd be inclined to agree if I were paying $130 for it, as a freebie though, pretty good. I'll let you know how it is when I get it

Grand Vins De France Box Set

Very impressive box set for $131.69 at Costco Lidcombe.
Don't know anything about French wines. Any good wine here?

Re: Grand Vins De France Box Set

Is it just me... (as I sip the amazing Devil's Lair Cab Sauv 2012 in Fiji after I snuck it into my luggage) ... Or does it strike others as a bit odd, that Costco (Costco!) are selling fancy French wines and (last month) Aldi Liquor were selling super premium bubbles - Krug. What next? IGA selling Hill of Grace!!

I would be interested to hear from inside the industry on what seismic shifts are occurring in the wine industry due to the Dot ThingyMyGiggy world we now live in. It must be impacting on what is being grown, blended, retired, marketed, wholesaled, and sold. One of the most obvious consequences is that wine - including the not-so-long-ago improbably, expensive fine wines - appear to be becoming more mainstream for the Aspirationals like me.

And this thought strikes me as a drink an amazing (heavily discounted) wine from an amazing producer, acquired from an Internet only website that started in a garage and has been around less than my eldest son!

PS: apologies for the obvious online brag. I couldn't help myself! Feeling relaxed and smug (and obviously pensive) on my first night's holiday in a while!

Re: Dan Murphy's Secret Selection Coonawarra Merlot

I actually purchased a bottle of this to take to MELCAN II - I arrived home the night before to find Cruiserette and a girlfriend chatting, giggling and scoffing the Paul Louis Martin - I tried it - not impressed - I would not buy again but as always YMMV.

Disclaimer: I do not own this thread.

Cross posted from Facebook but I bought a couple and opened one tonight:

Just tasted the Secret Champers. Passable, not so bad that you'd make mimosas from it but nowhere near the $ they are asking for full price.
Mini-me had a small sip of mine and proclaimed it "A little bit dull, you think it's going to be great and then the taste sort of disappears on your tongue" - she's no Tyson Stelzer but I'd say this is a fair assessment.

Mini-me will go far I think ;)

Lugged the two cases of Veuve out of my work office and into the home cellar. Thank you Cellarmasters for the low, low price deal on six packs.
