Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I noticed today, the store had French wine for $16 down from $18 but I don't want to waste my money on the cheapest wine without any idea. I need to work out what to look for? Trial & Error? Haha

You keep asking the same question here. The answer you've been told is get along to various tastings and find out what you like. No one is going to be able to tell you what you like :)

I realise your comments are intended as a "basic rule" but I think there is a bit if misinformation here.

As a basic rule you should stay away from the wines with a packaging made for export: Label with French flag, Eiffel Tower or a frog ;)
French wine labels are very classic and 'serious'. It also needs to be cork. Screw cap is for cheap wines.

Generally true, but there are starting to be some producers releasing quality wine under screw cap now. So be careful not to dismiss it immediately.

Wines always display their appellation on the label and that is what you look for as the strict appellation rules make it a guarantee of quality.
Absolutely not a guarantee of quality. There is plenty of swill being made there that has the appellation on the label.

'Bordeaux' and 'Bourgogne' (don't even talk to me about 'Burgundy') are not proper appellation but general one for wines that didn't make it into their sub-region appellation.
Again, not quite correct. Taking Burgundy for example, just because the wine isn't village or vineyard level doesn't make it rubbish. Conversely there are plenty of Bourgogne that are better than village level wines.

Another example to muddy the waters would be Tetre Roteboeuf in St Emillion. A stunning wine that isn't even Grand Cru Classe. Why? Because the owner refuses to submit his wines. If he did its likely it would acheived Premier Grand Cru Classé 'B' or possibly 'A'.

So for Bordeaux for example you will look for a 'St Emilion', a 'Margaux' or a 'Haut Médoc' without any mention of 'Bordeaux' on the bottle.
That is just some basic about reading a label when you have no ideas. Not true in every cases but could help you avoiding the cough wines made for the poms ;)

French wine is clear as mud. Every region uses a different classification system. Which leads back to the original advice. Go along to tastings!
