Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Hit the buy on that. Had a 20% off voucher which brought it down to $160 for 3. Seemed like a deep discount too good to refuse for a 97 JH. Quite the packaging too.

Any other recommendations worth picking up on cellar one?

Great year, so that seems a very nice price at that.

Does suggest to me yet more slashing and shifting old stock by our great houses. Of course there'll always be a bit of tidying stock of old gift boxes etc but it seems more than a trickle rn...
 
I opened mine 2005 Grenache I got from Langtons and it is definitely over the hill. An ok drink but if I could go back in time I would have avoided.
I opened one of these this week. Mine was still delicious, still plenty of sugar with that incredible cherry/acetone bead that seems to hold in these Clarendon grenaches when any other flavours have paled a bit. Given that my only experience of straight grenache is old Clarendon ones, this seems to be what I think a nice grenache should taste like! Maybe I'm missing out, as I do see write-ups suggesting more.

For $12 it was a fun thing.
 
Out of curiosity, has anyone who purchased the museum release Clarendon Hills wines via Carpe Diem of late had a chance to sample them? How do they stack up? Past it? Are they worth the punt?
Definitely has been worth a punt. I've gone for these when $30 or below from Langtons (and even some from GWD!) and I think many are excellent value as the winery seeks to move out what must be a huge stash.

While my experience has been almost entirely good, I did get one box of their bottom range wines (Bakers Gully) which were very old, and they were nothing compared to the Brookman and Liandra Syrahs (and the Astralis) and the grenaches. The recent grenache did look like the cork might be breached in many in the batch, suggesting it hasn't just sat in a nice McLaren Vale cave its whole life... I didn't love the straight Merlot and wonder if sticking to the McLaren Vale bread and butter shiraz is best.

Acetone? As in nail polish remover etc.? Generally regarded as a winemaking fault or due to oxidation.
I stopped buying the old Clarendon Hills years ago after the first couple of forays resulted in mostly duds.

I confess I worked in a physics chem lab and loved the smell of acetone (and pure ethanol)! I think this taste is in the line of kirsch cherry rather than a fault (oxidation definitely possible but it seems like a part of the wine, and many writers identify a cherry tone). Everyone else who has had the grenache with me has really enjoyed it.

Ah yes, I remember some of the concoctions we made and drank with the absolute ethanol smuggled out of the organic chem lab at uni in the mid-late 60's. Acetone not so much a favourite.
 

This looks very popular on another platform, adding 100OFFYOURSHIRAZ

Shiraz with plenty of sauce. Sweet blackberry and plum flavours come liberally adorned in smoky, bacon-y oak. One sip and you’re either in love or aghast; its persona is immediately and overwhelmingly apparent. The fruit here, the juicy sweet flow of it, and the oak, so silken and smoky at once, make for pretty sexy drinking, depending of course in your tastes in wood. One thing that should be emphasised here though is that the fruit feels fresh and flowing; it’s not heavy/hot/overdone. - Campbell Mattinson

Ulithorne Prospera I believe.
 
The Blue one was released under gift boxes after 8 years by the winery. I had the 2012 last year same blue colour label. But if you purchase the normal released it will be the black one.
Just checked my 2019 vintage - it is a blue label
