Is the new DJ AMEX Plat a direct earn card to QFF or can you warehouse it and then send it across? and can you transfer to other airline FF programs?

You can only choose one of them, not both.

oh ok. The plat charge seems like the only card that does this? But not sure if that is worth the $900..

As per so many card insurances these days, things look decidedly dodgy if you try and rely upon the included "Ace" travel insurance for reward redeemed tickets.

Card travel insurance and benefits do not apply to flights taken or tickets
issued using a frequent traveller program unless (i) you have enrolled in
a Card travel insurance and benefit program expressly offering an option
for airline rewards program partner ticket coverage; (ii) all fees relating to
the particular program have been paid; and (iii) you have otherwise
complied with the terms and conditions of the particular travel insurance
and benefit program. For David Jones American Express Platinum
Cardmembers, overseas travel insurance may apply to frequent traveller
rewards, subject to conditions. Call 1300 36 89 89 for details.

I'm not sure I can even decipher that gobbledegook.

Its my view that mostly the different card insurances have been watered down over time and are now so full of holes that they are just too risky to rely upon.

Anyway, value wise for me:

Entry Cost = $295
Bonus points = 30,000, converted to most DJ MR airline partners at 2:1 = 15,000 equivalent

I value most airlines FF points at 3c each, but don't like to buy them at more than 1c each as a general rule of thumb.

So, 15K airline points = $450 potential value to me, but at a cost of 1.9c per point. I'm theoretically already ahead then, but would prefer 1c each point max, given that, I'd want an additional $145 of 1c points to fully cover the annual fee. 29,000 DJ Rewards points. As the earn rate looks like this:

DJ spend : 4 DJ points/$ = 2 airlines points / $
Petrol / Food: 3 DJ points = 1.5 airlines points / $
Other spend: 1 DJ points = 0.5 airlines points / $

The only interesting spend here is DJ spend. Amex Edge will gain 3 MR Ascent points / $ spend on food or 2:1$ on fuel which directly translates nowadays to 1:1 airline point, even the Plat Velocity Amex earns at 1.5/$, so not really any advantage there and unlikely to divert any food or fuel spend away from existing Amex cards.

So, I need to spend at DJ's to gain advantage. 29,000 DJ MR points required to break even after the entry bonus points, 4 DJ MR points/$ = $7,250 in the first year at DJ's, everything after that is a bonus.

In the second and subsequent years though, things get a lot worse. $295/year will require 29,500 airlines points (buying at 1c each) = 59,000 DJ points / 4 = $14,750 to break even.

If one were to choose QFF instead of DJ MR, then, again assuming 3c of value to be derived from a single QFF point and buying at 1c per QFF point

30,000 Bonus points = 22,500 QFF points = $675 of potential value. Buying at 1c each though means that only $225 of the $295 fee is covered. So, need to recover 70$ = 7,000 QFF points = 9,333 DJ rewards points / 4 = $2333 of spend at DJ's

As the other bennies of the card are the same no mater which way you direct your points, it seems to me that the QFF route is the most effective, and by some considerable margin.

If ones spend were only a few thousand a year at DJ's it probably won't be a card worth keeping after the first 12 months however.

Nice breakdown. I probably won't go for it as I don't spend much at DJ's. Waiting for a Hilton card :)

As an existing David Jones card member I received my invitation and took it. I should receive my new card and supplementary card early next week. I think the platinum is still only available to existing David Jones Card members

I'm tempted, for the first year anyway. I spend a little bit at DJ's, though it doesn't tend to be white goods or other large items, so the value is not super high. I've sort of moved away from collecting QFF points in recent times, but with MH still due to come online with OW 1st qtr next year I could use a few more OW redeemable points.

Like you, I'm very interested to see if Hilton and Amex push out a card. But I'd be surprised if anything appears this year, and further to that, one wonders what bonuses and bennies would come with it anyway. Not a lot to be gained on planning around vapourware, so I'll wait for something more concrete.

So now the dust has settled to a large degree what do we think?

The two cards look awfully similar as far as benefits go. The only notable exception of interest to me is the 4 DJ Rewards points / $ spent via the Platinum version - but as its only a 2 DJ points / $ premium I'd have to spend a vast amount of money at DJ's to start getting ahead versus the 2 points/$ on the standard card.

As outlined above, it certainly looks like you would need to have a significant spend at DJ's for it to even be worth considering the new card. For me the Platinum Edge remains a more appealing option.

Nice summary - you have 15,000 points in the standard row but your calculations are still correct.

For those looking to take up David Jones Platinum Amex here is the link - Apply now and receive your welcome bonus

Now technically it is still by invitation only to current DJ card holders - so good luck guys - great pts earn if you can secure it.

I thought about using this link but given it's invitation only, I didn't want to risk not getting the 30k MR / 22.5k QFF points. Instead, I walked into David Jones and 'allowed' myself to be caught by the AMEX rep. She asked me if I had a David Jones Card and I said yes, a very old one. She then pulled out the Platinum pack from under the counter, and asked if I would be interested in signing up for a Platinum DJs AMEX, with 30k MR / 22.5k QFF points. I said yes. I guess that was my 'invitation'.

What does everyone think about the David Jones AMEX (not the platinum, the regular $99 annual fee per year one) compared to the Platinum Edge? Annual fee cheaper by $50 and get 3 points per $ instead of 2 at petrol stations, plus 2 points per dollar at DJs. Downside is no free flight.

Guess it depends how likely you'd be to use the free flight vs how much you spend on fuel and at DJs per year

Is the transfer rate to MR the same as normal AMEX MR?

As far as I can tell on the website, it is the usual AMEX MR program (or alternatively QFF points at 0.75 per $1)

https://davidjones.americanexpress....toid=adfb417db755a110VgnVCM200000cff4ad94RCRD

Be careful here. I have always found this to be deliberately misleading - the David Jones American Express Membership Rewards program is definitely not the same as the American Express Ascent Membership Rewards Program (or Ascent Premium)

In the David Jones program the conversion of MR points to Airlines is 2:1 (except NZ) whereas the Ascent MR is 1:1

Always worth considering and comparing of course. I get good value from my Amex Plat Edge though as I'm in Perth and use my free flight to travel east and as a step up to Flex->Business. The Edge also provides free Ascent MR membership, something I have to pay for separately with my Corporate Green Charge and many other Amex users also have to pay for the privilege of MR membership (though its worth it imho as its so flexible). If I were spending a large amount at DJ and or on Petrol every year perhaps it would make more sense to go to the DJ Amex ... but I think the numbers would need to be very large.

I'm going to do a number crunch on this tomorrow as I've got a pile of DJ's spend to do over the next couple of months and having looked at the pros/cons and cost of the DJ std versus the DJ Plat my current inclination is to go for the std card with the 15K sign-on bonus points and probably transfer all my DJ earned points to either QFF or to MR Ascent ... conversion from the DJ MR scheme is too poor to contemplate - but I'll see what the numbers tell me before making a decision.

Returned home this week from USA and DJs Amex pack waiting - activated and we are UP UP and AWAY.

Can now 100% confirm following:
DJs spend = 4pts / $1
Major Supermarkets and Servos spend = 3pts / $1
Others = 1pt / $1

No cap on earning - no cap on transfers.

30K bonus pts after you use card 3 times outside DJs in first month

DJs Rewards points transfer to Membership Rewards pts at 1:1 - but these MR pts cannot accumulate into normal Amex MR pool - you must transfer direct to airline partners.

Transfer to SQ, MH, VA etc 1:1
Transfer to QF 1:0.75

You can also GIFT to others - $5 / 1,000 to GIFT - max GIFT / annum 50K.

Hope this helps some - Cruiserette is on a mission - she loves DJs.

It's not free to transfer, isn't it? Someone mentioned before that $5 per 1000 points from DJ rewards=>MR.

YES transfers are free - it was me who mentioned the charge earlier - I was passing on info supplied to me from DJs reps - they were wrong.

No cap on earning - no cap on transfers to airline partners.

The fee to transfer is if you GIFT to someone else - $5 / 1,000pts - max 50K GIFTING pa.
