I never quite understood the difference between gourmet sandwiches and normal sandwiches. Does the ham and cheese taste different in the gourmet sandwich?

From what I have generally seen:

  • Not the normal white or wholemeal bread.
  • Not normally cheddar cheese, and may not be a cheese generally found in the home fridge
  • Generally bigger
  • Different greens - nor the iceberg lettuce
  • Various unusual combinations of sauces/dressings

And free range bread.

I'll have to give Luke Mangan a call next time I make a ham, cheese and tomato sandwich for lunch.
I wouldn't know where to start

I am so over the same old food as a weekly flyer some change would be good
I like the beef wrap but seem last few flights its always the sandwich
what amazes me is several times i have been on a flexi fare and offered nothing!!!!
food in virgin lounges cld do with some variety as well.

Well funny enough, I can now report that I was not served a wrap on the 3pm MEL-SYD today.

I and all other flexi fare pax received a ham cheese and tomato sandwich. I also got a complimentary soft drink, which now has been included in the flexi fare.

Crew use seating manifests to deliver flexi fare food, did you happen to change seats?
They also don't interrupt resting guests, were you sleeping / eyes closed?

I have seen crew go back numerous times through a flight (time permitting) to deliver food to guests who had there eyes closed

Good point
its usualy half asleep down and hangover back
:D

They wash their hands when making the "gourmet" one. ;)
That is a good point. :p I am going to searching for a gourmet tuna sandwich and see if the tuna tastes any different to the tuna in the tins I buy. ;)

I think you the nail on the head. Labelling something gourmet allows you to charge more for the product.

I think the service will change once the Premium economy ceases and business class service begins on January 17, well im hoping anyway!

Because I would not be a happy flyer if all i got is a beef wrap on a 4 hour flight in business class.

LOL yes "Gourmet" is the new word for "overpriced". Recently I bought some "gourmet" ham, "gourmet" sea salt chips, "gourmet" orange juice, and I swear the only difference I notice was my wallet had less money.

Thanks Noob, that is very interesting.

That's what I thought might happen when the official business class gets rolled on January 17. so im guessing the beef wrap and gourmet ham sandwiches will still be available for purchase for other pax, but business class pax will get a hot breakie or pancakes in the morning, something else for lunch and a hot meal for dinner.

it's a shame my darwin flight to melb is on Jan 14, so im 3 days out of sampling the new business class service, so ill just get the beef wrap i guess or beef pie.

Interesting comment about the width of the J seats. They do look rather narrow in the pics.

Just found that they are 18'' - 3.5'' less than Qantas skybeds, so a bit tight in comparison! However, it probably isn't fair on my behalf to compare domestic seats with international.

Remember these are a short term though and either way A330 J has received some great reviews!
