Declining levels of IFE

Don't you have an wifi compatible smartphone?
My smartphone is extremely slow and inconsistent. It has wifi but I would not want to be watching anything on that screen for more than a few minutes. And battery does not last long once used on the internet so I assume the same thiing with wifi connection.

For many years airlines were falling over themselves to provide the best IFE and all of a sudden they have come to realisation they cannot provide IFE anymore?

Something is not quite right. Seats are also expensive to install and maintain. How long before we have bring your own seat?

So what happens to those (like me) who do not own a 'BYO device' or if they did own one they do not want to cart it everywhere with them on their travels?

Sorry, no IFE for you?

You have a laptop. If you choose not to fly with it, that's your call.

My children play with toys and read books when flying. No need for multiple iPads at all.

I do care, therefore, to me, your statement is incorrect.

FWIW, there's a reason I used percentages rather than actual $ figures. $10-$20 might be 'nothing' to me on a $1000 fare, but significant on an $120 fare.

Not to mention when you save $10 on 100 flights a year. If lovestotravel is not bother by $1000 they can always transfer it to my bank account.

serfty, lovestotravel said "in my books...I couldn't care less" so it's difficult to argue that s/he is incorrect

Yep and serfty said he is bothered by the amount.

My wife tells me constantly that it's not possible to read boys as we don't do anything "normally". Your kids must have the making of psychologists if they can manage it!

The airline I fly with should be providing IFE for free for my convenience.

As I said earlier. What next? Bring your own seat? Load your own luggage?

Fixed now  Still as girls they might be trying to read boys. Not that I want to know about it.

Why should they? Why?

Btw it's not free. Ife cost is factored into the fare. You want the device provided at your convenience? Pay to fly an airline that provides it.

As for your other questions....

That looks to be the way to do it. Fly a full service carrier.

Laugh now. It won't be so funny when it is reality.

John I believe the OP was in relation to a full service airline where the IFE was faulty. Hence much of this discussion has been about having a "plan B" for such eventualities which IMHO is a good plan to have.

Let me get this straight

1) Virgin has planes without IFE. People complain.
2) Virgin implements IFE solution in planes to address above point. People complain.

Good times.

@lovestotravel: come on now, you've used that line "don't have to read my posts" every time someone brings up the valid point you spend A LOT of your spare time complaining about Virgin domestic when you don't fly them. Do you possibly maybe have a chip on your shoulder about Virgin and like to whinge? That's fine and all, but the fact you keep implying you present an objective opinion is a bit far fetched now.

@JohnK: don't you often fly VA mainly on your OOL commute as the times and prices suit you? Guess that's the price you pay for no included device.

Yep and VA provides the full service that I require of it.

Those 2 will never be reality in the way you imply due to safety and security requirements. But I do note that QF prefers me to tag and 'load' my luggage now.

Yes. I don't have an endless budget I can throw at the airlines unfortunately.

My concern is for IFE on longer flights especially overseas. I am not carrying a laptop with me wherever I go.

You don't need something as large as a laptop.

My 10.5" Acer weighs a kilo and has a 6 hour battery life.

It goes with me everywhere.

It has a footprint of 0.05 m[sup]2[/sup] and sits happily OP on a tray take with room to spare.

When travelling I use it for movies, email, AFF, Skype, surfing the web, trip planning and many other things.

With all that it is far easier to use than a tablet.

I paid $330 four years ago and it is still going strong.

I'm 100% with you on this score.......however, as others have said, that choice is ours to make. VA have/are implementing their choice of ife and we can utilise it or reject it. That decision is ours. For me, I'll most likely reject it mostly and just read or listen to music. For longer flights, I'll most likely buy a tablet of some kind....reluctantly!

As a "baby boomer" I have ignored a lot of the current electronic/digital technology because I don't understand it. I do not have an i anything. I do have a laptop but for domestic flights a kindle/ book is quite sufficient. If it's a clear day sometimes I just look at our great Country as we fly over it.

For me IFE is not an issue for other than transcontinental flights.

I just don't see the need for gadgetry for a flight of an hour or two

As a service company that is an extremely poor decision. I don't care that the smartphone/tablet penetration in market is ~70%.

That is a great idea but I think you and I do totally different things when we are overseas.

What do I do with my laptop/notebook etc when I am playing golf. Leave it in hotel safe? Take it with me and leave it in locker in Golf club? Not that smart either. Then I have to keep it with me for a long time as sometimes I am not back into hotel room until 4:00am.

Yes I know this is a different type of issue.

I guess I could just buy 10-15 of these devices and budget an extra $330 every trip and if I come back home with device in tact all is fine otherwise I have only thrown away $330 extra.

Just so Virgin can save costs providing IFE, continue to charge the same airfares and give a bigger bonus to senior management. Hmmm....

Now that sounds like a few good stories to be told some day!
Sadly there is not much to tell as most of the time I suffer from short term memory loss. That is a chronic condition I have had since birth.

OT but the plan next trip is my girlfriend will come down from Chiang Mai to babysit me.... err.... I mean spend some time with me....
