DFAT Warning [Do NOT Travel overseas]

Virgin Australia have just announced it is cancelling 100% of all international flights till June.

Sorry I missed the start date.

So yes, it is seeming to be more a case of being able to get home... by commercial means

Just checked Jetstar's booking engine, meant to fly to HNL leaving SYD on Mar 28, return Apr 11. Flights up to Mar 31 available for booking, any flights after that cancelled, including our return. No notification from JQ yet, hopefully this means we can get a refund rather than a voucher.

The 'up to 31 March' is consistent with what QF Group announced yesterday, but it said in its ASX release that the fine detail would emerge in a few days, probably not all at once, but maybe by end of this business week (by Friday 20.)

This will be interesting.

JQs CoC actually steps out what they do in an event beyond their control.

Conditions of Carriage - JQ | Jetstar (section 9.2)

But you also have rights under Consumer Law. However, it's possible that airlines could go insolvent if refunding everyone at once. Curious times.

Jetstar cancelling flights due to lack of demand would appear to be in their control, rather than flights cancelled due to weather or government orders.

Level 4 Travel Ban World Wide...

It is a very sad day, but something that is required

The reasoning behind the schools policy..

30% of health care workers would leave their post, go home and look after their kids
Kids flooding the general population including grandparents
Any closure would be for a minimum of 6 months
Massive job losses across the country
It's the same policy that Singapore has implemented - and it's worked
Supported unanimously by the fed, states and territories and their respective CMO and CHO

Level 4 Travel Ban World Wide...

Sorry to be a pedant, but its a DFAT 'do not travel' advice. Not a ban.

We now advise all Australians: do not travel overseas at this time. This is our highest advice level (level 4 of 4).

If you are already overseas and wish to return to Australia, we recommend you do so as soon as possible by commercial means.

Regardless of your destination, age or health, our advice is do not travel at this time.

From the Prime Minister.

TRAVEL BAN UPGRADED

The travel ban for every Australian is being upgraded to level four – do not travel – for the entire world.

"That is the first time that has ever happened in Australia's history," Mr Morrison said.

"For those who are thinking of going overseas in the school holidays, don't. Don't go overseas. The biggest risk we have had and the biggest incidents of cases we have had has been from Australians returning from overseas, from many countries that you wouldn't have expected that to be a source."

@Admin should we open a new tread about the Ban or change the title of this tread?

Things are moving so quickly at the moment

What are the implications for booking flights now for travel later in the year, banking on the Do Not Travel being lifted in time? Possible to book now, buy insurance once Do Not Travel is lifted, and fly as per normal?

So as per DFAT advice are we entitled to refunds for current international flights?

If flights are cancelled then in theory yes, full refunds. If the airlines collapse first then it'll be a question of getting the money back from your credit card as in the Ansett collapse.

Level 4 advice also should mean travel insurance will pay out if you booked before it became a known event (23/1 for China, 31/1 for ROTW).

Again, please don't be offended - I am being a pedant, but the 'ban' there looks like a media headline. The quote doesn't have the PM or the government 'banning' anything.

You are correct. They can’t stop you going anywhere (although this “coronacrisis” could well see changes to civil liberties - we’re already being locked indoors without actually having a virus). Getting home could be an issue if no flights are operating though.
