Bugger Cathay Pacific had a ticket blunder on New Year's day and was selling $20k first class tickets for $990 economy tickets prices and honoring them!

This was on yesterday. I got the news as it was happening (I am in Europe at the moment). I have no plan to visit Vietnam anytime soon (or the US for the matter), so did not book anything.

Was on to it once it hit the forums.. So pretty much right from the start.. Had the full pick of options.. But with a 1 year old in tow the missus wasn't in the least interested

I woke up NYD to messages from a mate wanting to do a craft beer tasting weekend in SFO on these fares.
Wife wasn't as enthused.
He booked, but only the USD650 J to YVR

Knew about it but figured bookings would be cancelled once it went viral.

I think thats what SQ did a couple of years ago on a similar mistake.

Likewise. I looked at it and while it was VERY tempting I decided I could not be bothered chasing up a refund once CX decided it was an error.

Recommend NYC for craft beer tasting. I've been in NYC for the last 14 days. Extraordinary variety of craft beers. Better than anywhere I've ever seen in the US.

Yeah, liked your selection!
Have been NYC a few times, would need to stay a year to get through even a minority of the variety available!

I bought one DAD to JFK about ten minutes after it was posted on FT, thinking that it may not last very long. Having just been in the northeast, I am now wishing I was going to SFO or YVR, and also wish for a shorter stay in the USA to allow more time to see Vietnam. But hey, I really shouldn't be complaining.

How are people positioning to DAD or HAN? I have some awards on hold, but wondering if I should tough it out to Vietnam with Jetstar for <$500 return.

Also, I am wondering who to credit the points with as I don't have any status due to normally booking with points.

Agree. I have been privileged. I've even been ordering in high quality beers (like Heady Topper) via EBay to be delivered to the hotel.

On points value alone, I would definitely choose Alaska.
Howver the flights themselves would give you a good leg up for status in QF which might suit

I'm in for one DAD-xHKG-JFK-xHKG-DAD with the long-hauls in F and the short-hauls in J for about AUD1200.

If I keep the itinerary (not 100% certain at this stage) I will fly Qantas to Singapore then Vietnam Airlines to DAD via SGN or HAN. A little on the pricey side and times aren't ideal but you can't have everything.

I'll credit the longs to AS which, if I still have no status by then, will I think earn me 56k points 16144 x 3.5, if I've done it correctly). Alaska only requires 50k for Australia-North America in J one-way or 60k Australia-HKG return in J. Or you could credit to Qantas where a Platinum would earn 37.5k - or enough for a return flight coast-to-coast, in Australia, in Y. Oh, the decisions!

Good work in snagging a ticket Danger. The Oz-US is actually 55K AS miles. Not a biggy considering your fare earns just over that amount.
