Digital Passenger Declaration to Replace Incoming Passenger Card

am not interested in getting a new phone regularly mainly because I use a phone as a phone. I should not have to spend more money because the Government keeps putting out apps that are coughpy.

The main reason to keep phones relatively current is to ensure the OS is supported, you have security patches etc.

No one suggested you upgrade specifically because of this app, given there is the clunkier alternative of a web site.

Time to look again Lynda2475. You did quote me and you misquoted and/or out of context.

Nope you that argued against my response to Anna that you "have to" re-enter information. I then quoted your unproven claim that "most" people cant get the app to work, this is your opinion/experience but certainly not mine. Many is not Most (most requires more than 50%). I quoted you directly, completely in context.

If the app truely wasn't working for most it would have been pulled from use. Thousands are using it every day to enter the country, so it does work however ugly it is.

IME it works for most. Just as IME apple users are generally less tech savvy than Android users.

FYI swipe does work on Samsung - there are 3 ways to get a screen shot on a Samsung:

You misquoted me!

Moving on though, Samsung or iPhone or anything else is irrelevant to the discussion. It should work well on all phone types.

If it was fully functional it would have a much better rating than 1.3, people wouldn't be complaining about it, IT types would not be saying it's awful and Matt would not have written an article about it.

You were fortunate that it worked well for you but a lot of others do not share that experience.

You misquoted me!

LOL no I directly quoted you using the quote tool - all i did was bold the word most, you have extrapolated the fact that some (and AFF skews older) people have had issues to the majority when this is far from fact. Anyway you have decided you will preference the web over the app that is your decision I care not. BUT when people make absolute statements stating empirically that you "have to" reenter stuff I will continue to call BS as you do not "have to", you only "may need to".

It does work on both phone types, what doesn't work on both phone types apparently is screen capture which again is nothing to do with the app, and everything to do with basic phone features which apple has decided to make app dependent but Android & Windows have not.

To give an analogy, the government provides a paper form (equivalent to the app), you fill it in then need to make a copy so you go separately to the photocopier (akin to the screen capture on your phone) copier brand A (android) will let you copy anything = win, copier brand B (apple) has arbitrarily decided can only copy forms it pre-approves - dud; but not the responsibility of the form (app) creator. So if you bought copier brand b (apple) you have to get creative and use a different form (web) in order to be able to capture a copy or take a photo or something.

I would wager I have much more experience with phone app development than most here, apple is a nightmare to deal with compared with Android or Windows.

Wow! It works! Thanks for the info.

Intriguing as in post #277 you said you didn't quote me at all.

LOL out of context again.

Wherever I quoted you it was a direct quote only bolding for emphasis. Where I responded without a quote I was referencing earlier posts - its blatantly clear except that you are wanting an argument because you know your claim that majority cant use the app is unsubstantiated and just your opinion.

Anyway you haven't provided any hard evidence to prove that majority are unable to submit using the app, so I leave it there. Your opinion is your opinion, my experience is very different.

You said you didn't quote me: you did.

The word majority is yours, not mine. (I said many)

I did provide the information but by your own words: "I don't need to read the reviews,"

I look forward to meeting you in Newcastle in October and I'll introduce you to an IT manager, a test pilot a fighter pilot/QFI and probably a transport pilot/QFI (ie tech savvy people) who all agree with me about how poor the app is.

Time out.

All these recent Government apps seem to be poor. They work for some and not for others. My sense is that most people find a way to get the DPD done and make their way home. We used the online version and will stick to that for our next time in September.

Actually you said most; and then provided a dictionary definition that said most = majority. Neither statement was mine.

The OP Anna stated that you "have to" re-enter info, which I corrected as this is not the case - I did not have to re-enter anything; and know many others who used the app who likewise were able to scan their vax cert and passport chip and have all info populate and submit.

You are incorrectly assuming i think the app is good, i do not and have never stated such. I merely dispute the claim that it is unusable. I found it much easier to use than expected given all the whining in this thread. Is it a great user experience? Certainly not! Does it get the job done? Yes. Could it be improved? Of course. Is it worse than other government apps - nope.

Government departments have no competition, so they don't put the same priority on have great apps as private companies. You have to use it, you cant shop around for a better option, so they don't do more than they can get away with.

You can introduce me to another IT PM, I know a great many already, I currently manage a number directly (including one that use to be a pilot) and have been an IT PM myself. I have directly manged programs that delivered mobile apps for large corporate, ones with 4+/5 app ratings; I also work with UX designers and testers and know intimately the pain that Apple are to work with and get apps approved for their app store compared with Windows and Android, they even force you to remove great features.

Just a note of app ratings, you are unlikely to see high rating on any government app and can take with a grain of salt the rating on any app. Most people don't bother to rate the apps they download (good or bad) but they are more likely to submit a bad one than a good or neutral one. Private companies also spend money to buy high ratings, as this sees their app bumped up in the search results, they pay for media reviews etc too. Government wont ever bother with that as they don't need to.

All the hyperbole on how impossible the DPD is to use is actually scaring some AFFers off international travel, when in reality its not that big a deal. It is actually far less stressful and much quicker than lining up for PCR on xmas day was so I could fly to Queensland last December. Far less stressful than QF failing to reissue tickets for flight changes or trying to speak to a competent QF call centre agent.

Using the DPD app is the price of being able to fly again, it is a price I happily pay, dont ever want to be locked away from the world for 2 years ever again.

I cannot equate using this dpd thing is the price we have to pay to travel again. I thought that was everything to do with getting vaccinated. And for Aus citizens the Proof of Vaccination is attached to our passport anyway.

That is great for you however what people are trying to point out is that your experience is the exception to the rule and that most people unfortunately do not have that experience.
Many people are not as tech savvy, nor should they need to be if the app was any good.

Incorrect
The definitions provided said many:
adjective: a large number of
pronoun: a large number of people or things
noun: the majority of people

Context is important.

The word most was used once and the word many (defined in post #284) was used multiple (many) times. Please do not misquote me again.

Whilst we are being pedantic:
Is it worse than other government apps - nope.
Look again. It rates much worse that the VIC, NSW, SA, WA, QLD, NT & TAS services apps both IOS and android.

This thread seems to be unravelling. Because someone does not like the dpd does not make it bad. And whether people say "lots", "many", "most", no one has provided actual data to support the use of such terms. There have been about 800 reviews on Google Play of which about 80% are 1, but that's hardly a valid statistic. Let's keep this at the "I don't/ do like it" without goig ito the realms hyperbole.

Ok. Here you go. From the App store. Just a sample. I'm going with @straitman definition. How many 1 star reviews will convince you? Note that it is sorted by Most Recent. And not Most Critical. There is just one positive review in the 12 I sampled just now.

Yes, as I said, it's a storm in a teacup. Totally statistically not significant. Those who post on these websites are but a tiny proportion of the travelling public.

I've moved on.

I'll be doing another DPD in September and then 2 more in October as wife and daughter cannot do their own DPD.

The good thing about life is that I now take work laptop with me on holidays so I can work a few days while I am holidays to stretch annual leave further.

One thing I've learnt is don't be too reliant on smartphones. They're not meant to fully replace desktops. Plus I prefer many desktop websites to the mobile version. Much easier to use.
