Discussion on Cats, Moggies and Felines in general [with Pictures]

Hope the cat is feeling better now k_sheep. It sounds like it just couldn't have been predicted at such a young age so don't beat yourself up.

Our 4 year old moggie (who has yellow eyes but the shoe fetish!) has been in kitty hospital for the last 4 days with diabetic ketoacidosis. :( New diagnosis, he was pretty damn flat when we took him in.

Noticed he was looking lean (he's always been thin) in the last week but just assumed he didn't like the food. Feel guilty now! But he was acting totally normal until one day before he just crashed.

Don't feel guilty as cats hide things very well. I completely missed a 1.4kg weight loss in my cat as he's fluffy. I picked up he was not right due to the water consumption and peeing

But I know what you're going through. We were fortunate and caught M's before there were ketones in the blood but his BSL was high 20s.

He pushed himself into remission after short stint on insulin but it was short lived :(

He was back at the vet this week as I picked up sugar in his urine, and spent the week there adjusting him back to the insulin but he got to come home yesterday. BSL on admission was 32 :( but he'd been happy in himself.

So we are back on the insulin train, complete with fortnightly glucose curves.

Don't be too worried about giving insulin shots at home - it is really easy.

Good luck and let us know how he's going.

Vet called, his BSL is now 4 (previous lowest was 14) so he's on the mend. Had a poop, so if he has dinner tonight he can come home tomorrow.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I still feel bad - I had also noticed I was filling up the water bowl way more than I used to, but both cats play in it and spill it everywhere all the time so thought nothing of it.

Somewhat worried about how this will work with holidays but we'll cross that bridge when it comes. We're moving house in 3 weeks which will probably stress him out, and we need to find a vet at the new house ... sigh. Oh well!

Our boarding place is run by a Vet Nurse and she is fine taking care of cats that need extra care. Costs a little more but it's worth it.

4 is low! We dropped to that and had to stop the insulin to avoid a hypo.

Honestly if he's going to require twice daily injections then board him at your vets - it's piece of mind. It's the decision I have made even through I trust my sitter implicitly. I'd rather they did not have to stress about it, be confined by the insulin timing etc etc

Yep he overshot a bit. So staying in another day to make sure it's up into normal range. Apparently tried to bite the vet this morning so his spirit is coming back!

I love our vet here in BNE - hope I can find a similar one close by in the new house! And boarding him at the vet is a great idea, had never even considered that. We normally just get the neighbours or friends to drop by but yes he'll be better off with the vet or nurse. Thanks guys.

It's tough leaving them in the vets isn't it? I have hated it these last few times but I know it is the best place for him - let's them play with the dose but monitor him closely. The dose levels are so minute for cats and it's a fine line for them.

Are you moving too far from your current vet to keep going to them? You'll need to go back in about 2 weeks for the first glucose curve.

About 1hr 20 min drive - I think would be too stressful for him.

Hubby is staying behind for a few months for work, so I'll leave the cat with him so he can get to the vet regularly while getting stabilised.

He's looking way better - still skinny and has wobbly legs (peripheral neuropathy) but he seems brighter.

Our cat wouldn't have coped with a long drive so I can see the need to find somewhere closer to your new place. I suppose the good thing is that you can have a look around first. I wonder if your current vet has any suggestions?

Our cat just tucks himself into a ball in his carrier and goes to sleep. Car travel has never worried him.

He's a rag doll isn't he? They are supposed to be very placid. Patsy used to squawk in the 2 kms between our place and the vet and daughter's two cats set up a yowling duet as soon as they are put in their carriers.

With +1 and I going away for a couple of months soon we have to put diabetic Munn the Cat into boarding. I'm starting to worry how she will go. But what else can you do??

Hopefully fine!

My vet is about 35 mins in light traffic - given its mostly motorway. He's not the happiest traveller - tells me about it every so often but on the way home, he's close to silent and sleeps. Always use a thick bobbly bath mat in his cage as invariably he pees somewhere along the M2!

Try Woodside Cattery. Google it. Bit of a drive but Sue there is a Vet Nurse and every Vet I've spoken to in Adelaide knows her well. She is lovely with the cats. Had to take Pushka there the day after she'd had significant surgery after a cat fight and Pushka fell in love with her which is quite a feat.

A work colleague of mine has a 20yo diabetic cat, so she's given me their details - only a 15 min drive from the new place, so will give them a go.

That could be promising for you k_sheep. Hopefully you will feel confident with the new vet.
And the good news is she's happy to look after our cats when we go away, and vice versa :)

They've got 4, whereas we've got 2 so not a completely fair trade :p But our turtle and snake might make up for it ...
