Don't take checked bags if possible as you'll want to avoid leaving airside. The check in desks don't open for MH until 3 hours before the flight so you'll be stuck in the check in area with next to no seating for a couple of hours. Airside the (only) lounge is rubbish, I tried the Japan airlines and the Qatar ones last time and neither would let me stay despite both being oneworld. I think the Japan one would have had I had status and not just a business class ticket whereas Qatar refused outright. The JL lounge is small but probably better than the one you'll be directed to.

The option I'm looking at would involve a few hours in the daytime in MNL. Can I ask, what are the reasons you'd avoid it? Having never been myself I'd like some insight if possible?

Most reports I've read about MNL are not favorable so personally if I had to overnight somewhere it wouldn't be MNL. A few hours there then fair enough but an overnight I'd probably look elsewhere.

Ok, so firstly thanks for all the responses everyone. This forum is just so helpful!

I've got my first status run booked and I went with PER-KUL-BKK-KUL-CMB-KUL-BKK-KUL-PER over three days. This should see me comfortably reach gold for the first time! I'm actually excited now! Thanks again for all of your help. Maybe I'll do a trip report....

Looks like PTY runs are back out of YVR - obviously not as good as before given the recoding of fares, but still decent value.

Can now put Asian trips on the backburner.
Direct ADL - NAN with FJ to start next year.
This is very very very very good, as its most likely will carry a QF code, on a wide body, and then I can get from NAN to AKL and then back to ADL via east coast AU, ...
Just read the snippet on the Adelaide Now (Advertiser) website.
Status Run here I come.

It's a 737, although that should really have little bearing on status-run potential.

There's an assumption there that one could find a reasonable fare to AKL via NAN on FJ to make it a worthwhile run (also noting that FJ runs NAN-AKL in 737's last I noted), and if one wanted to use a QF code on AKL-NAN (I have no idea if QF codeshare on NAN-AKL) that QF would provide a ADL-AKL fare with routing valid via NAN - it seems unlikely. A series of one way flights would probably not be very economic but I guess a very good TA could find a way

So I'm looking at doing BKK-KUL-MNL-KUL-BKK in J with MH to tack a status run onto a holiday...

My question is actually about my main flights with Jetstar I can go MEL-BKK-MEL for 360aud no SC/points OR MEL-SIN-BKK-SIN-MEL for 580aud with 110 SC and like 5000points and meals and bags etc.

Thoughts ? SC or no SC? Sale ends tonight I think...

110SC for $220 extra, or $2/SC, is a great earn rate and possibly better than you'll get with your MH runs. Do you need the extra 110SC?

Sad that jetstars business max bundle never goes on sale... price is ridiculous for a sub par j product e.g latam/air asia j offers more value at cheaper prices...

Indeed. The best SC earn rates I've seen on JQ in the last few years have always been on Starter Plus fares.

its depressing how expensive it is to fly in/from AU as QA/JQ effectively monopolized the market and VA is not even an option unless you only fly to 1/4 of the world. Now if only VA joins star alliance... id jump onboard in an instant ----- but OFC that is never going to happen because JB is going to run his outfit right into the f4t5oiuing ground.

I went with the Starter Plus fares. To be honest I haven't flown JQ before and I'm not looking forward to it. As a QF gold I'll get lounge access in MEL/SIN/BKK right ?

Anyway yeah, 580aud for 110SC is reasonable, ratio of 5.3. I may need them, it just gives me flexibility to choose between VA and QF later on as I am looking at maintaining status both.

BKK to MNL return in J has a ratio of 3.1. I was considering BKK to Penang as I could turn that into a tax deduction, but the earn is lousy. Any other good status run destinations apart from CMB and MNL ?

Gold will give access to the QF lounge in MEL and SIN (assuming it's open), but not BKK as that's an associated lounge. You won't be able to access other Oneworld lounges in MEL/SIN/BKK as JQ isn't part of the Oneworld alliance.

JQ short haul seats are A LOT better than QA which is why i book JQ (with starter) even when they are more expensive than QA.
