re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Thanks for the heads up. Just pulled the trigger on a BNE-SYD-WLG-SYD-BNE for $1133. It requires an overnight in WLG but making use of the current $150 back for $700 spend on my Amex as well as DSC offer gives me 480SC (240SC x 2) for $983 at $2.05/SC. Pretty happy with that.

Just to confirm, the offer is directly linked to the booking page so that you cant use a gift voucher?

Which offer? Any sale or SC promo can be used with vouchers as long as the conditions of the promo (eg: restrictions on codeshare flights, dates etc) are met.

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Actually they had not run global SC offers, apart from this April's DSC offer which was out of the blue, for some time.

All other offers have been targeted and only to certain people. For example, since making P1 in 2014 I have not received an offer (which makes perfect sense to me) - I of course took full advantage of the April DSC offer open to all though :)

The whole point, in my view, of bonus SC offers is to stimulate demand and basically bag some cash. Similar with the point offers.

Sales on specific routes are either to stimulate traffic on a new route or low demand route(which may be seasonal, such as routes to FNQ during the summer vs winter) or to compete with another airline's offer(ie: match).

One aims to fill seats, the other aims to fill the balance sheet more directly.

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

If there is another global DSC offer it likely won't be till at least mid April when all flights qualifying under this year's offer will have been flown.

I'm hoping there'll be another global DSC offer next year but I'm not counting on it. I hope to retain WP this membership year and if another DSC offer comes in time I may be able to retain it the following membership year as well.

I made good use of the offer in April to do a status run MEL-BNE-CNS return that meant I was able to reach WP whereas otherwise I would have reached SG last membership year.

That's a good observation.

QANTAS may not do a global DSC offer for quite some time. So the risk if you don't take advantage of a bonus SC offer if you have one is that you could have to get all your SCs without any bonus. This would mean doing a more expensive status run if you need one.

:/ was talking about the sale fare. I wish I had a 50% SC offer... I'd book this instant. Plus theres the gift voucher and amex deal on...

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

my take on SC offers - global or targeted - I never assume there will be one and don't base my earnings around there being one.

If there is that's fantastic and I take full advantage where possible (April was a gooood time :) ) but I do not consider these things as gimmes in any way, shape or form.

Just like sales - tthey come and go, sometimes prices better than before, sometimes they have the J one way F the other deals, sometimes the sale fares are decent, sometimes not.. and just because there was a sale on a certain route at X time the last Y years doesn't mean there will be this year, or next... I keep an eye open and make choices if/when things come up, and if I have a destination planned then I set alerts and the like.

it's all a game to maximise the benefit IMHO

but I don't take any bonus offers as givens - that way I can only ever be happily surprised :)

Or not surprised, as the case may be - haven't received a targeted bonus SC offer in years :(

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

OK brains trust. I'm planning my first status run.

My anniversary is 31/01/17 and I'm currently at 415 SC's for the year so far. I'm not likely to get as close as this to gold again but with a reasonable amount of whY travel to Asia next year, and a trip back to the UK, Gold would be handy for lounge access and the like. I've tried to keep this as short and as cheap as possible as SWMBO isn't too keen (the promise of lounge access on our trip back to the UK next year seems to be swaying her). All up I'm looking at $1,466.50.

I'm booking two separate tickets both with MH, PER - BKK Return and BKK - CMB Return.

Questions: is this crazy? Have I left enough time for connections? I reckon I'll earn 310 SC's, could someone sanity check please? I have 24 hours to kill in CMB and want to avoid spending money while I'm there, any ideas? Any other advice or pitfalls to watch out for?

PER - KUL - BKK - Discount Economy Arrives 10.15 20/01/17
BKK - KUL - CMB - Business Departs 14.15 20/01/17 arrives 23.15 20/01/17
CMB - KUL - BKK - Business Departs 00.15 22/01/17 arrives 10.15 22/01/17
BKK - KUL - PER - Discount economy Departs 14.15 22/01/17

Thanks in advance you beautiful people!

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

PER - AKL isn't viable. I'm looking at $1400 one way for 160 SC's with a stop in SYD. I think for the cost my MH run is viable. I'm flying economy out of and into Aus so 70 SC's for these segments is acceptable. The J return for 240 SC's is where I'll earn.

Why CMB tho. There are MH sales fare from BKK/KUL/SIN to better places to lesser fare and similar sc earn

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Scheduling mainly. CMB gets me back in BKK by 10.15am, meaning I've got 4 hours before departing for PER. I looked at MNL which would have saved me a bit of cash but I wouldn't make the next flight out on the same day meaning another layover.

Hopefully no significant delays with all of that routing.....

If all you're going to use SG for is lounge access on the UK trip I would question the need to do this at all. Put the $1,500 towards an ex SIN,CMB,BKK to EU J fare instead.

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Not just the UK trip. I'll have at least 3 trips to Asia (SIN, KUL, BKK and MNL are likely destinations) along with at least 2 trips to the east coast.

I've got sale Y fares to the UK for $4,400 for three of us. The $1,500 wouldn't go far in getting the 3 of us to EU in J. Regardless of that, the Mrs and the nipper would likely lose it.

I understand but you'll need 285SC before the end of January, so say 6 weeks, with a narrow window and budget... I can't see how you'd manage those sort of numbers, within the Australisia region for anything shy of $2-2.5k (unless you got one of these +50% SC offers).

I understand that this is over half way to Gold, but you're running out of time.

I would think of your asia, EU trips are later next year, post Feb you could fly a few sale fares and the like potentially though it may be a bridge too far to get there. I kind of agree that the cost and effort is not insignificant compared to the gain of having it.

It also doesn't help that the sales for late Dec/Jan flights have pretty much passed, so you're looking at more expensive options.
