I probably should have checked at the start of the sale, but the JQ free return sale is a pretty good status run to Japan.

You can find return tickets for around 800-1000 return on Y Max ex SYD (exMEL doesn't have as many options that don't have long layover). That should earn 180 SC return journey which works out to be very good value. ~$5 or less per SC

Just checked that one out as well, June dates around Queens birthday isn’t too bad. The free + max bundle return is usually mid week or goes into a Monday afternoon arrival at Sydney. Decisions…

The vouchers are actually gift vouchers (GV). They work essentially as a down payment for a future booking.
E.g. if you buy a $50 GV, you eventually go to redeem it for a flight. The full $50 will be used in the redemption and then you pay the outstanding balance with your CC to complete the booking.

If you want multiple DSC bookings this way, you'd need to buy an equal amount of GV's during the DSC promo period.
Hey I was just looking up about Vouchers and DSC. Correct me if I'm wrong, but essentially whats happening here is you're purchasing vouchers during DSC period and then using them later to book any QF flight later and still earn DSC?

I was just looking at some domestic JAL flights to consider flying vs Shinkansen and realised there's some serious potential SC earnings here.

Lets take HND <> ITM as a baseline. That earns 80 SC return in J and 100 in F. Looking at mid may I can see flights for ~35k yen return J class. Assuming $1 = 90 yen. Thats about $390 or $4.87 per SC.

There's definitely some creative routing available too. One of my searches to visit Aomori offered me AOJ > ITM > HND for 18k yen. That would be 80 SC for almost $2.5 per SC. Alas i couldn't get the JAL site to shoot me that option again.

Need to look at it a bit more for creative domestic JL routing but definitely a lot of potential here. of course the caveat is that you need to find your way to Japan first.

Edit: only Just realised JL dom J earns at QF Y+ equivalent. I'll look at some F prices and report back

You should check the QFF earn categories for Japan Airlines. Domestic Class J earns are crippled and F is only a good earner in the full flex class.

Ah you're right didn't see that dom J booked into prem economy. Time to look a bit at F prices then. Theres still some pretty cheap F tickets so also some potential.

Edit: Ok looks like in F for baseline ITM <> HND its about 53k return or $588 for 100 SC or $5.8 per SC. Still decent earning rate and It would make me consider whether I'd want to take the bullet train vs flying a bit more.

I did suggest looking at the booking class in your other post but if you can find reasonable options - all good.

Meanwhile, having just booked some flights to Europe ex Indonesia, there is/was excellent AY fares via DOH (basically codeshare on QR then AY or QR metal) to CPH and/or OSL for ~A$3,600 (320 SCs).

Ultimately, I booked CX J for ~A$4k CGK-HKG-LHR//MAD-HKG-DPS (400 SCs) via Webjet (also bookable direct with CX but in IDR) with the additional benefit of a $75 AMEX cash back and freebie $150 Webjet credit courtesy of Latitude. The CX offer perfectly matched my travel plans whereas CPH/OSL had significantly higher costs to stay there and ultimately move on elsewhere.

Positioning flights QF classic reward SYD-CGK (whY) and DPS-PER-SYD (whY/J) for ~70k + $250 pp. An upgrade request on QF41 is pending but that’s still about $4k return from SYD to Europe - with a slight hiccup of JQ DPS-PER but we’ll survive - I hope! As PC, there’s SCs on those QF reward sectors also. So WP secured for another year…

You'll survive. And on the way home, less risk of jq cancellation ruining your entire trip.

Yep, wouldn’t take the risk on the outbound…

But returning, they’re “day flights” without the need to stopover in PER. So that was another benefit.

CX have some decent sales by the looks. Saw some MNL-HKG-DXB flights for about $1700 return which would net you 320 SC’s
Also a good CX deal for ICN-HKG-SIN, around $1200 return or so. Lots of dates available. ICN-HKG is 60 SC and HKG-SIN is 80 SC. Lots of competition on that route so understandable it might be cheaper.

Edit: nvm wrong class for the search

Applied for Tier Accelerator status match but QFF have advised me "We recently have (sic) a Status Match Campaign, unfortunately, this campaign is not eligible for your program". I'm relocating to AKL and obviously with VA only servicing ZQN was keen to make the move back to Q. Well, that's a bit sad. I was last SG with Q back in 2014. Obviously I wasn't showing much 'loyalty' myself by moving over to VA for all those years.

Fares are much higher compared to 2022. I remember paying $1178 for a return SYD-BNE-AKL. Cheapest I can find this year is nearly $2k.

A quick search this morning, cheapest per SC I've found is BNE-MEL-CHC for $3.50/SC.

Last year there was also a NZ sale on, hence lower prices.

Sydney to Darwin always seems to be a reliable way to manufacture status credits and this year is no exception: $870 to earn 120 status credits:

Also Perth to Honolulu which will attract 110 status credits ordinarily but with the double status credits promotion makes it 220:

Even with DSC, the jetstar sale was much better $ per SC for HNL with max bundles. Of course you're travelling on JQ instrad of QF but purely from a $ per SC pov. I think i found JQ flights for $450 max bundle for 70 SC ex SYD / MEL during the sale and 360 return. Those tickets are all snapped up now though.
