QF codeshare? Otherwise DSC wouldn’t be in play ☹️
Looking at ITA Matrix, that route doesn't seem to exist. Now it is replaced with the direct CMB-SYD UL service, which won't help for DSC ... surprisingly SIN is not even coming in the usual search, might have to force it?

It used to be QF codeshare all the way, CMB-SIN-SYD-CHC and return ...

Use Qantas (or JQ Plus or Max ticket) to locate to Singapore on an ordinary ticket. Get to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) on a 3K plus ticket (earns on QFF) KUL will be a lot cheaper than SIN.
Pick a southern Asia or Indian Ocean destination and book a mid range Sri Lankan economy ticket to a nice beach (SL, Maldives, Seychelles). Use bid for upgrade to get business class (I) seats.. Try just above the minimum bids. Also UL is flying to Japan again.

Enjoy wandering

Oh, that reminds of the JAL J fares Precovid. Hopefully returning soon. For about $5k you could pick up SYD-UK/Euro via NRT/NND but choose wisely, you could get SYD-SIN(QF) / SIN-TYO (JL) / TYO-HEL (JL/AY) / HEL-LHR/Euro port (AY) and similar combos back!

Best I have come up with on QF domestic ex-SYD is Darwin return in J, choosing one of the multi leg options, say via ADL. About 260 SC for about $2,500 or so, there appear to be some nice hotels there and a few fun things to do

Not anymore - these were nerfed a few months ago. Any flight with an MH flight number is now a waste of time from an earning perspective.
Yeah, I thought I read that here somewhere. This thread or elsewhere?

Just went looking for a local QF Status Run……. Not much going…..
Best I could find just now was 160 SC for $1,253. To Christchurch out of Brisbane (that is local enough for me).

Depending how many SC you need and what time you have, if you can get indirect e.g. BNE-SYD-CHC or BNE-MEL-CHC for about the same or not much more that can provide better value per SC. BNE-MEL-CHC-MEL-BNE in J would get 280SC. BNE-SYD-CHC-SYD-BNE would get 240SC and going via SYD one way and MEL the other would get you 260SC.

With my program year about to end at the end of this month and me re-qualifying for QF Gold the hard way (having flown 610 status credits), I look forward to next program year (Dec 1 2022 - Nov 31 2023) and the prospect of perhaps earning QF World Platinum.

So far I've got a number of flights books and will take advantage of a number of status credit earning opportunities but would love the community's help in scrape together the remaining 300 or so status credit I need to qualify for Platinum.

Here's a summary of what I've got thus far:

1668523091357.png

As you can see I've got a total of 1,050 status credits "booked" for the program year. Remaining travel that I have planned during that period include a trip to Amsterdam in July to attend a conference and a trip to US in October to visit labs and attend a conference. I'll be out of country from April 17 to May 25 due to attend a conference and deal with some personal items and have already booked all of my travel (I think) there mostly as an Aeroplan award and/or flying KLM/Delta. As an added wrinkle, I'm also looking to keep my Delta Gold Medallion status I status matched for earlier this year (which requires flying 50,000 miles give or take on SkyTeam airlines) which I am planning on doing with one trip to Canada in December 2023 and possibly flying a SkyTeam partner for either the Holland or US trip.

I am open to doing weekend trips either short haul domestic within Australia or long haul to Auckland or Singapore if the price is right and the status credits make sense.

Looking forward to discovering how I can bridge the gap in status credits.

My suggestion would be to keep your powder dry until (and if) a DSC offer comes along early in the 2023 year and then scoop up a couple of runs that fit into your schedule.

Any tips, hints or suggestions for decent AA or AS F routes in Apr / May 2023? Currently flying into SFO for a bit over a week and then probably a 1 wk road trip finishing in SEA before heading to NYC for another wk+. There’s some so so fares on AS SEA-LGA and then LGA-SAN (albeit both non-stop). Spend a few days in SAN before driving to LAX for our flight home.

We’re not necessarily up for a hardcore status run (will be encumbered with checked luggage) but keen to maximise SC earn if the opportunity presents itself.

The cryptic crossword style status run tips seem to have dried up since Covid. Probably thanks to the general paucity of good premium fares everywhere?

Anyway, open to ideas?

For anyone following at home, I‘ve not found anything vaguely exciting by way of decent SC earn / $ let alone SRs throughout 2023…. 😔

I was reviewing some previous trips and actually in awe of a fare I got to get to a cruise departing SJU pre Covid. ~US$300 for LAX-DFW-MIA-SJU (”J”) including lay flat B787 on LAX-DFW. Currently looking at US$600-$700 to fly transcon on either AS or AA…

Well folks, yesterday I took the final flight of this program year with Qantas (December 1, 2021 - November 30, 2022): a 5:05 PM departure from SYD to CBR. In doing so, I earned the final 10 status credits needed to clock in 600 status credits from flying to re-qualify from Gold (I understand my status got auto-extended but please bear with me). I thought I'd take this opportunity to share the flights I took to earn those 600 status credits, along with how much I spent to get there. I'd also like to highlight the benefits I took advantage of as a valued QF Gold member to try and put some value on whether the status was worth pursuing in the end.

In doing so, I hope this provides guidance for those thinking of hoping QF treadmill to earn QF Gold status:

As you can see I earned status credits the card way, flying many predominantly cheap JQ MAX fares within Australia to rack up the status credits for status with an average acquisition cost of $5 per status credit. This is by no means either the fastest way to earn Qantas status nor the cheapest (more on that later). You will notice some trips on JQ include connecting flights. These trips were originally booked as non-stop but JQ cancelled the nonstop flight and I was pushed onto a connecting flight, hence the additional status credit accrual. N.B. This doesn't include flights I took with KLM or Air Canada nor does it include QF/JQ award flights I took within Australia (including to LDH, HBA and LRE).

Now getting back to probably the most important question, was it worth it in terms of the perks I got as being a loyal QF Gold member?
  • Lounge access since that was something I made heavy use of, conservatively visiting a QF lounge 18 times which would justify the $600 annual fee for lounge membership (works out to ~$33 per visit)
  • Priority Customer Service - Let's assume it's worth $5/call. From my recollection, I made 3 calls to QF during that time so $15 value there
  • Complimentary seat selection on QF flights. Let's assume that's worth just $5/flight (all QF flights were domestic, most were regional hoppers). I took 12 QF flights this program year (including award flights) so that's worth $60
  • Preferential Access to Award Seats - $0 (didn't make any far out QF award bookings)
  • Classic Upgrade Award Priority - $25 for successful domestic waitlisting and $100 for successful international waitlisting. I had 1 waitlisted QF domestic upgrade that cleared - $25
  • Priority Check-In - $5 per visit - I used that feature 6 times - $30
  • Priority Security - $10 per visit - used that 8 times - $80
  • Priority Boarding - Oh Please!
  • Waitlist and Standby Priority - Didn't use that benefit
  • Priority Baggage - Place $0 value since baggage priority seems like a game of roulette on QF
  • Extra baggage allowance - $0 not used
  • Complimentary Q Tag - not received - $0
  • Partner Benefits - $0 - haven't flown with partners
Hence, overall I would argue I got approximately $810 in value this year which isn't as great as the benefits I received from United. However, in Qantas' defence, I would almost exclusively fly United long-haul international and frankly didn't have much of an opportunity to fly them or OneWorld partners international long haul this year.

So to sum up was it worth it in the end? Well, considering I spent almost all of 2020 and 2021 locked at home due to COVID border restrictions, I'd say yes. I got to explore a wide swath of Australia at arguably bargain basement prices considering the number of trips booked. In addition, despite QF extending everyone's status for another year, there is benefit for earning these status credits for three reasons. First, all these status credits will count towards lifetime status and nearly accounts for 10% of the status credits required to earn lifetime Qantas Silver. Second, Qantas will rollover 40% of the status credits earned this year (unto 240 status credits) to next year meaning I'll have a head start to re-qualifying for QF Gold (or even making a run for QF Platinum). Third and perhaps less understood, I'll get a further 50 status credits to start next program year. The reason being is that I earned 500 status credits flying with QF/JQ towards the end of my program year qualifying me for a loyalty bonus of 50 status credits or 8,000 bonus points. Since I must choose the bonus within 90 days of receiving the offer, I'll simply select the 50 bonus status credits in early December thereby giving me that 50 status credit boost for 2022/2023 program year.

Unsure if this post was informative to anyone, just thought I'd share my experience and thought process here.

Does the JQ sectors allow QF lounge access as QF Gold?

Tried to look at some JQ Black Friday deals for a SYD-DRW Max fare run but looks like the best I can get is $468 for 80 SC (just under $6 per SC).

Would you know of a better time to get a Jetstar deal? Or is this probably the best we can get in these sorts of times?

I bought a Max fare for SYD > DRW when JetStar was having one of their sales around Thanksgiving last year and it cost $342.36. Keep in mind this was at a time when travel fell off a cliff, the price of oil was much less and inflation wasn't so big a deal. So I would say that's probably a good deal. One thing to keep in mind too is that you can get more than 80 status credits should JQ cancel a flight on you. For instance, my return was cancelled, and I ended up having to accept a connecting flight via ADL. Consequently I earned 100 status credits instead of the usual 80.

In terms of how to maximize status credit accrual your best bet would be during a double status credit promotion. Earlier this year when Qantas was running one, I booked SYD > AKL > MEL for ~ $1000 in J for January. That trip will earn 480 status credits, as I made the outbound and inbound flights connecting (i.e. SYD > MEL > AKL, AKL > SYD > MEL for return). Not a bad haul! But again, that's assuming that QF runs a double status promotion (if they do it'll likely be early in the year like March or April).

-RooFlyer88

A good sale to NZ with another DSC promo would be nice. You can do even better than 480SC depending where you are based. I got 520SC from MEL-SYD-CHC-BNE-MEL in J on DSC.
Indeed that is probably the fastest and arguably the cheapest way to "buy" status. However, one key question http_x92 should consider is what's the point of earning status and travelling in the first place? For me, flying up to Darwin was to enjoy the nice weather and attractions of Darwin. Earning points and SCs was a secondary concern. So yes, flying to AKL in J during a double status credits promotion when there's a sale on can make sense but they should also think about whether they would be interested in travelling there (I would which was one of the reasons I booked).

It's also important to realize that chasing status for the sake of chasing status doesn't make a whole lot of sense. What's the point of having QF Gold status if you only fly QF or OneWorld partners once a year? If you go into this expecting to be flying these airlines on a monthly or perhaps even weekly basis, then sure chasing status can make a whole lot of status. Otherwise, at the end of the day all you have is a Gold piece of plastic you barely use! Key things to consider when deciding on status would include whether you will use the perks such as extra baggage allowance, increased award availability or lounge access to name but a few. In some circumstances it can make sense to chase QF status if you've got 1 or 2 long haul flights in economy just for the added baggage allowance (incidentally this was where I was getting 30% of my Premier Gold status when I was an elite with United).

Yes, but JQ domestic flights departing SYD & MEL use a different terminal to the Qantas Club, so while it's technically possible to access the lounge it's very inconvenient.
One can certainly visit the QF lounges at MEL and SYD but it's something you need to plan out since you do need to leave the secure area of the Qantas domestic terminal at these airports and re-clear security. Certainly it can make sense if you've got say a 4 hour connection at either airport. That said, those two airports are merely the exceptions to the rule. Flying to DRW, or ADL, BNE, CNS or TSV for that matter, Qantas lounge access is a given in the sense that all QF and JQ flights depart from the same terminal.

All of that said, one thing to keep in mind when travelling on JQ from smaller airports like OOL or HBA as examples, is that QF lounges at such airports tend to only open an hour before a scheduled QF flight is set to depart meaning that if you are booked on a JQ flight and there are no QF flights taking off around the time your JQ flight takes off, you won't have a lounge!
