We were sprayed recently, I think coming back in from Bali. But might have been from KL. We were also sprayed somewhere else Overseas. Like you it had been years ago but seems to have become a thing again.
Some airlines treat their aircraft with long life insecticide which mitigates the need for spraying after arrival. Though sometimes they still are, some are randomly targeted by quarantine/biosecurity etc.
My brother had that as well a couple of weeks ago from DPS, I think its for the foot and mouth disease from Indonesia.Earlier this year on GA from CGK back into MEL we didn’t get the spray but had the liquid mat to walk through which was hilarious seeing some of the idiots walking through in their socks
Youngster!! It used to be standard on all (almost all?) international arrivals. Officials walking up both aisles with aerosol spray. Then it became a more subtle arrangement.

Don’t they carry out a more rigorous customs baggage inspection ( at least more numerous) if you’ve been to Bali? I know that Hobart Airport there’s a sign that says if you’ve been to Indonesia in the past seven days to tell the domestic customs person there as you enter the domestic terminal.
This was my understanding… QFi planes are treated with long life sprays, so don’t need to be sprayed every time. But unless foreign airlines had dedicated planes to australia, the random nature of the fleet means they need spraying.
I thought that some airlines also had the ventilation systems set up in such a way, that insecticide could be sprayed via the aircraft's systems (during landing), mitigating the need to do the aisle spray walk on arrival?
