Distance to DXB and points cost

Hi Guys

Just playing around in the hope that I will be able to book an award to DXB next year in J on QF (or QF number on EK) on the assumption that approvals go through and the P1 SST will be able to get three award seats released.

I just checked the distance and unless I am mistaken this is either a 15,000 mile classic or partner award. Checking mileage monkey it has SYD-DXB as 7,491 miles - so a return would be 14,982 miles - just marginally under 15,000 miles. This would based on the classic or partner awards scales be either 128,000 (classic) or 139,000 (partner) points per person.

Am I reading this right?

That would make the total cost for three people only 384K (c) or 417K (p) - much less than than the 750K I was planning to spend to get to Cyprus via LHR.

Have I missed anything?

Under the QF Classic Award Table, 7491m is a zone 8 award, so its 96,000 points o/w J

For QF classic and partner awards, its based on the sum of the individual "journeys" that make up the itinerary. Its only the OneWorld awards that are based on entire itinerary mileage.

Sorry for being dim but isnt the sum of a return journey the same as the total mileage - or is it one award to get there and one to get back?

The number of points you need for a Qantas & Partner Classic Award flight is calculated by adding up the one-way trips in your itinerary. There are no points charges for stopovers or for any non-flown (surface) segments. Your itinerary may have no more than 16 flights or surface segments. However, if the total distance of a single trip is over 15,000 miles, the trip must be broken down into sub-trips in order to calculate the number of points you need.

There is a definition of "Trip" for awards - in this case it's the end point of your journey. (Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions)

'Trip' means a series of one or more consecutive Flight Segments within an Itinerary:
(a) that does not include:
(i) a Stopover; or
(ii) a Flight Segment whose arrival city is the same as the departure city of any other Flight Segment in that series (in this instance the Trip will be broken at the farthest point from the departure city for that series);
(b) not exceeding the maximum permitted miles in the Qantas or Partner Classic Award tables(see qantas.com for the tables (the Benefits Guidebook also includes a version of these tables which was current at the print date of that Guidebook); or
(c) not broken by a change to or from any airline included in the Partner Classic Award table (see qantas.com for the table), excluding:
(i) any change from a British Airways Flight Segment included in the Qantas Classic Award table to a British Airways Flight Segment included in the Partner Classic Award table; and
(ii) any change to or from any airline included in the Qantas Classic Award table to or from any British Airways Flight Segment included in the Qantas Classic Award table.
Note: in paragraphs (c)(i) and (ii):

• 'a British Airways Flight Segment included in the Qantas Classic Award table' means a Flight Segment with a BA flight number which if it were the only Flight Segment in an Itinerary it would be covered by the Qantas Classic Award tables(see qantas.com for the table); and
• 'a British Airways Flight Segment included in the Partner Classic Award table' means a Flight Segment with a BA flight number which if it were the only Flight Segment in an Itinerary it would be covered by the Partner Classic Award table (see qantas.com for the table).

Thanks - the wording is still a little fuzzy but I checked with an example that they will give the calculation for a straight return - I used HKG and it charges for two one way trips. That is a shame then it is 3x 192K - still less than 252K if I was going to the UK and no UK APD.

OK - now that some awards have been loaded - I might give QF (aka the P1SST) a call. For absolute clarity we think the points cost is 96K each way. That is 192K per person (I assume no discount on points awards for four year olds?) so a total of 576,000 points? Might need to transfer some points from Amex...

PER-DXB is zone 6, i.e. 72k each way in Business.
ADL-DXB is zone 7, i.e. 84k each way in Business.
BNE/SYD/MEL-DXB is zone 8, i.e. 96k each way in Business.
