I think seeing the difference between my experience and kpc's experience, the key might be to book on NZ directly. I did, and was able to allocate an aisle bulkhead seat (10B) which is just behind what I suspect might be crew rests on the 767.
Either that, or there's an inherent service difference between the A320 and 767. I certainly enjoyed having a widebody trans tasman for once!
The check-in lady was hilarious though. She spotted that I was in 10B and said "Oh no, 10B. That's a really bad seat. I have to find something better for you". Then a few seconds later she said "Oh, you're in a 767. That's actually a really good seat!"
