Do you discourage others from using QF?

Hard to recommend anything flight wise when your friends routinely keep their feet on the ground.
Otherwise, from PER, QF to SIN or JQ/3K to DPS is fine. then find a partner airline if traveling further.
Keep the economics in hand when wandering

The best thing about QF is oneworld. So many good airlines, and you keep your status and benefits throughout.

The next best thing would be an international airline in one of the main alliances that partners with VA, but then you're at the whim of VA's management (ie swapping out DL with UA).

Unless you primarily fly internationally.

So I am LTP with AA and BA gold. I even am able to keep my benefits on QF and domestic J awards are cheaper through AA.
Don't need to be in QFF to have all the benefits of OW.

Yes, it goes both ways. Join QF to get benefits elsewhere in the alliance. Join another alliance member to get benefits with QF.

This does not really exist with VA, not with any forward certainty.

I'll mention it, and let them learn the hard way but some will still claim they are the best, yet their last international flight with an alternative airline was 20 years ago

Depends when you book and what you pay.

And cheap to some doesn’t mean the same to others.

Sure, if your company or the government pays, who cares about the cost 🙂 and the word used was 'cheaper' not cheap and I think most people would agree on what 'cheaper' means. ;)

We read it all the time now "Qantas' performance ... faults ... problems ... are just on par with the other airlines." Yet you pay a horrendous amount more for that equality Or rather, one (or employer/government) can pay more for QF economy than VA business, so not really talking about 'equality'.

Given I've voted with my feet (and wallet) how can I do other than encourage others to do similarly?

Do as you please of course, it’s just not accurate to say that any airline is horrendously more expensive than another at the moment in Y as it depends when you book.

QF has always been on the expensive side of things. Back in 2002 our son moved to the USA for 7 years. First 2 years in Philly and then 7 in NYC.
We used to fly BNE-JFK. QF wanted $13000 to fly there and back in J via LAX. JAL required us to spend $6600 to fly via NRT. As they say it was a no brainer.
Add to that when I turned 60 at the end of 2006 twice a year JAL would have a sale on for over 60s -2 fly for the price of one.

Not only that 2002 was the year JAL introduced their lie flat J class seat. Much better than the then QF recliners. And when QF introduced lie flat seating to J it was angled lie flat.
So in the early 2000s it was true you paid more to fly QF on an inferior seat in J.

I take the view adults make their own decisions. If I am asked for my opinion - I tell but do not actively dissuade anyone as everyone has unique needs/wants in their choice of carrier…
I do chuckle inwardly though when friends with highest QF status/Chairmans blah blah still talk about late/lost bags etc but would never dare try another airline.
We are all priviledged to have the choice

Yes internationally, as there are plenty of airlines to choose from and generally it isn't hard to find an airline that's better than Qanta's offerings.

But for domestic travel, Qantas pretty much has a monopoly on the high end of the domestic aviation market, so there isn't much of a choice.

Mate of mine flew JQ recently, booked the flight without asking me, and he knows I'm all over flights etc.

When he got to the airport and told flight delayed, he then decided to ask my thoughts on JQ.......

Trip resulted in:
One cancelled flight
5 hour delay for return home
Damaged bag
Inedible onboard food

After the flights he said "never again with Jetstar"

According to BITRE (Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport Research Economics) for October 2022, on time performance over all routes operated by airlines (Jetstar, Qantas, QantasLink, Rex Airlines, Virgin Australia and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines) averaged 69.3 per cent for on time arrivals and 68.5% or on time departures. The cancellation rate for the month was 2.9%. The equivalent figures for October 2021 were 88% for on time arrivals, 88.4% for on time departures and 3.7% for cancellations. Of the AU airlines QF perform the best with On Time Arrivals (74.2%), On Time Departures (73.9%) and Cancellations at 2.2% across 18,022 flights in October 2022

Compared to my recent experiences in the US and elsewhere, while sometime painful, the AU airlines are going OK. I won't be discouraging people from using QF. AU needs to have at least one safe and profitable airline. Pushing our hard earned $'s to competitive overseas airlines won't help improve QF's on time performance and/or cancellations.
