Dobbing someone into centrelink.

Does OP know they are receiving false claims or only think they are? I would feel uncomfortable dobbing if I did not know for certain.

On the other hand if they are receiving disability whilst being an active member of <a> Surfing Team then go your hardest.

Apple, google, Microsoft, all the foreign mining companies, et al who pay little or no tax here?

Transfer pricing is an interesting area and one journalists find easy to attack. I suspect the reality of foreign companies is they pay their fair share of tax for the value add of their products from a local perspective in general. I know of at least one well known multinational tech company that was told by the ATO they were paying too much tax.

I find it interesting the GST has enabled tradies to offer a 10% discount without it coming out of their own pocket. I also wonder how often they declare the GST they have collected when many people still pay them cash. I prefer to pay tradies by DD so there is a record of payment as well as for my own book keeping.

I would think carefully about the personal consequences for the OP, given the individual in question is a "close friend". You report on them, the authorities demand the friend make repayments for the overpayment. You listen to the friend complain, so you (a) say nothing in reply, or (b) politely agree about the unfairness, or (c) admit you reported them. Is the issue worth losing a friendship? And there is the possibility the friend faces a criminal prosecution.

Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.

I have had 2 friends rorting the system at various times. One still doing it now in a way the other one other died a few years ago.

I decided it wasn't worth reporting the rort.

Stuff them. They deserve nothing

paying TOO much tax ?? that is bizarre.

I was out with a Centrelink worker at breakfast this morning. She says it is toughening up with business failures causing lots of hurt.Divorced couples who have to remain in the same home because neither party can afford to move out.
Made me realize how lucky we are.

The Government would save more money if they shutdown the loophole of high income earners putting all their income into super and then taking it straight out, at only 15%.

They can't do that. It's tapped at $25,000 which includes the 9.25 % Superannuation guarantee. Need to keep up. (I know there are different limits for over 60's but nowhere near what this quoted post is alluding to. ;) )

"ALL" of their income? it goes in taxed at15%, in pension phase it's tax free ( subject to a few rules on age)
Remember it was originally introduced to encourage older Australians to stay longer in the work force. So NOT a loop hole but a legislated benefit. If my memory serves me the new levels are coming in , in July.
Today the max is $25k PA ( rising to $30k in july) or $35k ( temporary cap) for those over 49

There is a little bit of work to set it up.

I actually did the investigating about 20 years ago. I worked on a what as called "the dob squad". Our sole purpose was to review peoples entitlements when the public supplied the report . I would review about 3 people a day after the appropriate amounts of investigation carried out before contacting the accused. You can give the information without revealing your identity. I learnt back then that some offenders are relieved when caught as they sometimes can't see a way out.

If you have a taxable income that is above $300,000 in 2013 you would pay a surcharge on the 15% rate into superannuation even if you stayed within the modest $25,000 or $35,000 capped contribution levels.
That surcharge is still in place.

Reports can be made anon online to Centrelink, no one needs to know and they do investigate what is sent in.

Also, under Labor it didn't become easier to get onto disability. Shows a lack of understanding of the requirements.

If anything, the current Libs just reduced the capacity of the ATO to follow up fraud by cutting staff.

As for the question, yes, do it anon online.

Matt
