Does anyone have a Platinum Edge card? At my wits end with AMEX!

Hi Keith,

Did you do it online? As the online form actually asks us if we have a current AMEX card and also if we want to cancel the old one and just have the new one....

Cheers,
K.

I enquired about transferring over the phone but was advised that I was required to fill in another application form.

I reckon if you have existing Amex but not Platinum Edge card you still get 20K points. Last year I transfer my existing Amex to Qantas Ultimate Amex and still get 50K points. So it is likely this is the same.

I agree, and that's how I read it. I am technically a "new" customer to the Edge Card (as I have never had one before).

I applied online, and clicked on transfer existing card & cancel old card. My account shows Edge now about 24hours after application.

Hi Alanslegal,

Thanks for this information. Have they told you when you will get the 20000 bonus points? Or did you call up to check that you will 100% receive it?

Thanks,
K.

I've not gotten around to transferring yet.

Quick Q: I have a Platinum Charge Card and only want to transfer my complimentary Reserve card to the new Edge card, rather than getting rid of my charge account. The online form asks for my existing card account number - do I simply insert the Credit card number even though my main card account is the charge card? Is there a different process I have to follow to ensure they only transfer my Reserve account and leave my Charge card untouched?

Update: I rang AMEX again. This time I was told that I can only have the Reserve complimentary with my Charge card, not the Edge. And I'd be charged an additional $149 if I were to downgrade my Reserve to the Edge. :( As the Reserve is a complimentary benefit, you'd think they'd be v happy downgrading me to the Edge as it's a vastly cheaper card....:rolleyes:

This may seem a silly question - but why would you want to downgrade the card??:?:

I prefer the 3-2-1 earning structure of the Edge, which mean I'd simply put groceries and petrol to the Edge and everything else to the Charge Card. The free transtasman flights are of no interest to me, as the only NZ city I actually go to is WLG which isn't covered by the free flight benefit. You still get free domestic flights with the Edge. I think AMEX staff also mentioned that you lose the free hotel night with the Edge but it doesn't really worry me since most of the hotels on the list are yuck, or at least the options I was given when trying to use it in SYD and BNE.

A lot of the other Reserve benefits are the same as or not as good as what I already get with the Charge Card.

Save yourself $751/year and get the AMEX Platinum Edge then? ;) Or are you gunning for a Centurion invite?

Surely you don't want the Plat Charge for the SPG Gold membership. ;)

Actually it's only a $301 saving. ;) The travel insurance on the Edge is also far inferior to the Charge - annual insurance for both myself and my partner more than covers the annual fee (even if I had to pay the full $900) and what we're getting with AMEX is heaps better than what we were on before.

And I prefer any charge card to any credit card, especially when it comes to business spend.

I wish I could get the plat charge! My income is not $100k and above unfortunately :(
Is there another way of getting one? :)

I wanted one for a long time and my income is above the magic mark. But not enough to justify the annual fee, just. Then along came the Edge and I jumped on that. I think it is the perfect filler card for me and it has actually replaced the ANZ gold that I ditched earlier this year due to ANZs obvious dislike for customers

I've just applied for the Edge Card online as well (transfer from another Amex).

I spoke with Amex CSR and found out that:

- As long as annual fee is charged, I can immediately redeem the Virgin flight (unlike Qantas Ultimate Amex where I have to spend on QF first before I get the flight).

- The CSR told me that they actually booked on Blue Saver fare for the free flight. I checked virgin website, and asked them some specific dates for SYD-ADL, and it seemed that they have plenty of flights available, even when Virginblue.com.au shows the cost of one way up to $189 (normally $119).

So with this card I would get at least $238 value for only $149 (as I always travel SYD-ADL), not to mention not having to buy any DJ services before redemption, plus the 20K points. Excellent value!

Cool! How quickly will they send out the new card? Do you need to dump your old card now? Also did they mention when you will receive the 20000 membership rewards point? Also will it retain your membership rewards partners on the old account or do you need to reset up everything?

I was trying to book MEL-CNS from my platinum reserve card last month without success, despite the fact that blue saver fare was available. It appears that amex can only book into award class fare bucket, which is below blue saver fare in the fare bucket chain.

I cannot say that would apply to the edge card but then again, I don't think that the edge card will be able to book into higher fare bucket compared to the reserve card.

My card came pretty quickly, about a week or so. Got a phone call after about 3 days and was asked some questions about my spending habits, the person used those answers to determine the credit limit, which was set there on the phone.
I kept my old card as I'm getting that for free. The letter with the new card said that my credit limit was actually related to my combined card limits. Hence if I reduced my other card limit I could increase the Edge limit. Also that I was locked into the current credit limit for 6 months. No big deal.

Hi Medhead,

Did you apply online or you called up?

Online using the promotion link that mentioned the bonus points. I think in the past applying using the online form has been part of the qualification requirement. I just assumed that was the case with the edge but didn't actually check.

Thanks for the reply medhead. I am thinking should I keep my existing blue card when applying or do a transfer and remove my existing card? I'm just worried I won't get the 20k points if I transfer but should be OK you think? I know if I call up I will get 10 different answers...

Well I was wrong on this point and I think plenty of people here have shared their experience that it just requires being a new Edge customer to get the points. So it shouldn't matter either way. I really don't know very much about Amex cards, hopefully someone will chip in who has more experience than me.
