Does anyone have any idea what QF780 is doing tonight?

Looks like a shortage of A330s, yesterdays QF35 cancelled and combined onto an A380 operated QF37, which means no A380 to operate todays QF11 with todays QF37 cancelled.
I'm watching closely as currently booked on QF37 this weekend ...

Looks like QF648 is now cancelled, causing a roll-on effect for QF655 out of SYD tonight.

EDIT: Looks like it's not cancelled after all, and just re-scheduled to a 14.30 departure, still on EBB. It will get into SYD close to 10pm tonight.

This aircraft operated the QF71/72 rotation on the 14th with what appears to be a normal route. Following the coast from Perth to Exmouth, then to Jakarta before heading into Singapore.

On the 15th, it did the PER-SYD-PER QF642/651. Both sectors with similar routing.

Then we got the QF780 route in the OP with the following for the QF769 return

Are you sure its not the Tay-Tay effect?
Unlikely given 2 full a332s is more pax than a full a388

Seems they rolled qf37 into a delayed qf35 today instead of what they did the last couple of days which was cancel qf35 into qf37.

I guess logistically, its better to have QF35 pax move into QF37 last minute as a "delay" where as if you have the planning ahead of schedule, its fine to inform your QF37 pax that you're now on a retimed QF35. That way people won't show up to the airport at completely the wrong time.

If the APU issue makes that A332 so useless for even transcon let alone international routes shouldn't it be fixed? Or instead, used on the golden triangle for the next few days until the parts arrive? That way you could use some B738s for transcons, and use the aircraft on a SYD MEL-BNE rotation seein as it can't be more than 2 hours away from a diversion/alternative?

Looking at the flight history of the aircraft from Flightaware, this aircraft operated QF42 departing Jakarta for Sydney on Monday 12/02/24 where the flight path suggest it had an issue then. It then spent 24 hours without flying. Perhaps the issue was "fixed" and allowed operating QF71/72 on the 14th but has reoccured? My conjecture - Qantas is flying a part in from Europe and the plane is restricted (no ETOPS). Maybe it is operating QFA648 now back to Sydney for the fix?

Can't believe no one has yet queried whether those aboard will receive additional points/status credits given the extra mileage flown! 😂 😂
Problem is the Qantas points/SC earning table for domestic maxes out at "1,501 miles and over" for Australian Domestic ;) (this flight was 2775mi)

@jb747 can QF hold Edinburgh for ETOPS? I know it can't as an alternate but would have thought it could for ETOPS. Certainly in an actual emergency it's not a problem.
You’d need some sort of dual user agreement with the RAAF. So, in theory yes, but in practice, no.

Flightaware would disagree with your source.
My source is generally pretty good dazza.

When I get a chance, I’ll have play with the maps and numbers. I think a 767 in the same scenario would have been able to track from south of Alice direct to Melbourne. The difference is in the nominated ETOPS speed. The 767 speed was about 40 knots faster. If it doesn’t work, it’s not going to miss by much (perhaps less than 50nm).

I’m not sure that I would have accepted that MEL. Anything to do with PRIMs is much like skating on thin ice.
