Does Qantas cancel international flights due to low loads?

No. It's due to a 787 being put out of service. <redacted>
I understand your sentiment, but the pertinent questions is why is it being pulled out of service ( I understand that you may not wish to answer this)

Whatever the reason, the plane isn’t sitting there idle. It’s either being repaired, or it’s needed to cover another route somewhere else where they may be a plane short.

Cancelling a flight due to loads implies the aircraft then doesn’t have anything to do.

787s do go tech as we know. The other day I saw a UA trip to/from MEL cxl due to a tech issue. QF I am sure doesn't want the ac out of service - they carry freight, and reaccom 200odd pax oer servuce us expensive

Tbh an tech issue was my first thought. After all that MEL-LAX on likely woukd turn to fund the same flight two days later - so the double cxl makes sense if the issue was projected to last days over hours (eg getting engine parts or something).

I just don't buy the consolidation theory - as previously discussed.

Well as a data point QF11 on Monday was full in F/J and near full in Y. Premium had about 30% of seats free. That was a random Monday not even in school holidays.

I’ve been burnt looking at EF to gauge the likelihood of a spare seat. You see lots of 9s in Y you think there’s heaps - but it could be as low as 9 total or even lower if they are undersold in premium classes.

Being undersold in F/J is not a problem, it was A9 I9 on my flight two days out and it departed full.

Lots of private schools have a longer break. I had three weeks when I was at school.
We've taken Miss TC out a week early so we can go visit grandma in the US, otherwise it's a long way to go for a short visit.

Or self imposed different dates. I mean whats the school going to say when a well off family goes on holidays a week early (assuming nothing critical in the schooling week).
We've been given an absence learning plan (for prep!) and it's only five days of school.

I have heard from a QF source that they are actually 2 aircraft down at the moment due to technical reasons hence the LAX issues.

QF84 ran last Friday with J full, and Y about 50-60% full. QF81 was pretty full though.

Just got an email from Qantas that they cancel QF84 on 20 December, and moved me onto QF82 30 mins earlier.

Any idea/clue why they would do that so far out? Aircraft used somewhere else or is the Finnair flight running differently?

I would have expected a full QF84 shortly before XMAS…

Separate thread as to why QF84 exists for those interested: Why does QF84 exist?

Not sure what QF is doing with 84 and 82. They appear to be serving the same purpose but using two different codes.

In this case I don't believe that QF84 and QF82 would've existed to be flown on the same day previously rather more likely QF84 became QF82.
