Downgraded from Business Class on Qantas due to "tech crew" [pilot] Travel Requirements

They may be P1?
Maybe but that was known when all checked in. Online at luggage check in and at the QP. They arrived at QP same time as us and maybe 90 minutes prior. So why wait until after plane was due to fly? They did look too young but not impossible. Our upgrade was only advised at 10.30pm last night.

The issue.

While seated in business class in row 1 we were asked to leave the plane to speak to a Qantas Exec who told us we were downgraded to Y and he gave us two new boarding passes. No choice. We had to move. We had a connecting International flight.

Background
Yesterday we received the upgrade text for our flight ADL - Mel on Qantas. Sadly we didn’t get the same text for Mel - DPS but them’s the breaks.

Arrived at airport and checked luggage and off to QP. It was crowded. We ended up in the rear section next to two younger guys. They spoke loudly. So loud that when space freed up we moved. In the meantime we couldn’t help hear what they were saying to each other. We got the impression they were or had been working in the mines. They were off to Melbourne. Same flight as us.

Embarkation duly called and were seated for about 20 minutes. Everyone boarded. Then we overheard cabin crew say we were delayed because of two pilots who may or may not board. 🤷‍♀️. About five minutes later we two were asked to leave the plane to speak to an Exec.

He made sure we were not on the plane and we’re out of sight of the rest of the passengers. Said Sorry Sorry and handed us two boarding passes in Y. What do you do? No choice. I asked where the seats were. He said window and aisle.

We had to return to seats retrieve our things and go back to row 7. By which time other people had shifted to our seats. Kerfuffle. To make it worse - middle and aisle. The only middle seat occupied for multiple rows was me.

We looked up and saw those two young noisy men sit down.

The CSM was shocked and embarrassed and we reassured her she was doing great.

We have so many questions. How could this happen.

The two invaders had checked in and had boarding passes at the same time as we did. Were we already overbooked? We had to use Qantas counter checkin for later International transfer. Why didn’t it get picked up then. We had to scan passes at the QP at the same time as them. They were in the lounge for over an hour. Why didn’t it get picked it then?

They were 30 minutes late to board. They sure weren’t pilots - too young. Why did we get bumped for them? When were we bumped?

Anyone have any decent explanation because we just got a story full of discrepancies.
Quite appalling. I would complain in writing to Qantas for whatever good that will do.

Maybe they gave better chocolates to the CSM and the crew. :)

I guess it happened because someone stuffed up and they needed a quick solution.
You may have been the only upgrade and therefore logical sacrificial lambs.
The airline continues to be a pr disaster zone.

How did the 'Exec' identify himself (name/position)? Any idea or indication of what area of Qantas he was from?

Simplest explanation would be that the upgrade bot coughed and that the 2 guys were entitled to the upgrade 'first'. But why then the 'Exec' appearing and the cloak-and-dagger outside the aircraft? I've had upgrades withdrawn by a red light at the gate. How come both you and they managed to be checked in, and time elapsed in the lounge?

Why did the flight wait ~20 mins or so for these no-shows who were simply in the QP?

If there was a conflict then discovered, why didn't they simply get shown to the back?

I'm guessing they weren't any normal pax or 'crew'; not status but 'related' or 'connected'. Realised on boarding time they were down the back, or by then pi**ed enough to throw caution to the wind, and pulled some strings hence the 20 min delay.

What an airline.

additional points for the inconvenience.

... not to mention embarrassment. What would you think was happening if you saw people being taken out of J and put down the back - self upgraders?

I guess the two late arrivals may have been full fare pxs so your upgrades got dumped in favour of revenue?

Higher pecking order in upgrade priority?
The upgrades have been done, dusted. Everyone was checked in. Everyone had been to the lounge. The OPs where in their seat.

Something happened from when the time everyone was in the lounge to the time the interlopers boarded. I'm guessing they became unhappy with their lot and decided to do something about it - and hence the hold up.

And therein lies the mystery we are going to explore in a separate post.

... Maybe the son of a politician? ...
That was my initial thought. Whatever happened it is completely unacceptable. The "exec" got you outside so the rest of J did not see what an cough he was about to be. I would have stayed in my seat and made him explain there and then ... easy to say in hindsight of-course.

I am amazed by your calm countenance.

Well, the issue becomes a problem if you don’t obey the instructions of the crew and you end up on Facebook.

That's terrible.

I'd say the upgrade system somehow caused a double issue of those boarding passes. It sort of makes sense, removing you from the seats was to reduce the embarassment once QF determined someone else had BPs with the same seat numbers and were likely revenue passengers so suddenly they became priority.

If that's what happened, surely modern flight res systems don't do this? That's one hell of a screw up... I'd be milking this for points.
