Re: Rockpool Bar and Grill Lunch with QFF confirmed attendees

My apologies, I've gone way off topic.

did QF talk about expecting any new changes to the QFF program this year, the sense I got from the feedback was that Qantas Cash +EK tie up are all they can bite off in the foreseeable future?

Re: Rockpool Bar and Grill Lunch with QFF confirmed attendees

Yep that was it - the EK thing is huge for them and the QF Cash is also not a small undertaking (oh and the new bag tags for P1).

Re: Rockpool Bar and Grill Lunch with QFF confirmed attendees

I don't know about math, but lets try some maths. Week on, week off means 52 flights from say east coast to north west WA. Assume they book flexible Y that means 70SC each way. For a total of 3640 SC a year.

Are FIFOs somehow less worthy than other frequent flyers?

No, in principle. However, there is a greater proportion of animals in that demographic and they are extremely unpleasant to be around. So the issue isn't worthiness, the issue is travel experience.

Wow.

If the issue is "travel experience", then you'll appreciate that that sentiment goes both ways. And I think the FIFOs - and the companies who fund their travel and wish to keep them happy - have a bit more collective push and financial contribution to QF/QFF than any group here. And don't forget the mining company staff and execs who aren't in fluoro also furiously fueling QF's bottom line. So if they want the Perth QP done a certain way (decked out like The Palace at Kal, perhaps?) and the overall 'travel experience' to their liking, I think you'll find your future experience less to your liking, and more to theirs.

Re: Rockpool Bar and Grill Lunch with QFF confirmed attendees

very few fifo rosters are 1 week on, 1 week off. Most are 2 and 1 and longer. Add to that annual leave, discount Y, that interstate fifo is not the majority, that Qantas doesnt fly every fifo worker to every hub, that not everyone works in Karratha or Port Hedland, and I rest my case.

It depends on the roster. There are a few variations and I'd hardly agree that "most" are 2 and 1 or longer. Unless you'd like to link to a workforce survey. I also said North west WA. All flights to that area are in the same distance band as KTA. I wouldn't rest on a case based on such assumptions.

Wow. You've clearly gone off on a massive tangent to left field. But it seems my usual refrain about the Wild West is based in truth. I'd ask you to name one mining company executive that openly supports their employees behaving like filth animals in public when identifiable to their company. My travel experience involves treating other passengers, the aircraft, the staff and the lounge with respect. If you think a mining company executive will ask for the lounge to be turned into a topless bar or that qantas would agree, then I think you've grossly over estimate the value of fifo workers' travel experience.

The fact is my travel experience comment is about my expectation to not be subjected to filth, drunken, fighting, swearing, near paralytic animals in a lounge or on an aircraft. Not all fifo or hi viz passenger do that, but the types of people who do are over represented in those groups. The fact that you seem to support that behaviour is interesting.

Re: Rockpool Bar and Grill Lunch with QFF confirmed attendees

Qantas club used to be anytime access for domestic. As long as you were a member you could turn up and have a drink/snack. That has now changed and you are required to have a QF/JQ bp.

You're incorrect there that was a WP perk.

Calm down, man! And don't be silly, saying I'm seeming to "support their behaviour" . Really? :p

You called these fellow travellers "animals" in the post I quoted, no more, no less. OK, so now its "filth, drunken, fighting, swearing, near paralytic animals". If discussion here is going to be 'robust' so be it, but I suggest you may be prepared for a gentle ripost without resorting to OTT hyperbole.

If there's been behaviour as you describe in the QP, I would say it's:

* Appalling, unaccepatble and intolerable; (I'd go to the lounge staff and demand their immediate ejection)
and
* Not unique to FIFOs.

And if the animals revolt and demand the ejection of non animals (thinking along the lines of Animal Farm here), be prepared for to live in more "interesting" times!

(ps as for 'tangent', there's been a thread merge here - I'm replying to the thread on the Forum titled "Dress standards ...." but the former thread title is preserved at the top of the post.)

Edit: or un-merged? Either way I don't think we are talking about Rockpool !

Actually, if you go back far enough in time, MEL_Traveller is correct.
Absolutely!

By mid 90's Official QP access rule was basically same day travel, but this was not enfoced - show yon royal blue card and enter ...

Singlets, shorts and thongs have a place and that is at the beach or in your own home. .

How ancient are you exactly, dude? I'd seriously prefer it if we all dressed well, but really if you are going to try to call for restrictive areas that you can wear thongs then call for the same on women's open-toed shoes as well.

Re: Rockpool Bar and Grill Lunch with QFF confirmed attendees

Putting aside the theoretical maths for a moment, here's a seat map for an upcoming, mostly FIFO, flight (MEL-KTA). It doesn't look like a platinum-rich environment to me.
My take is one P1 in row 1 (yours truly), two plats in row 3, one gold(?) in the exit row and 22 other ranks at the back of the bus.
This is a fairly typical distribution on KTA bound flights from the east coast IME and also correlates with the 30 odd FIFOs that I know personally.

I suspect JohnK is old enough to not use" dude" when addressing a question to someone on a forum. :p

Might actually be quite apposite, here's a definition from Wiktionary:

(archaic) A dandy, a man who is very concerned about his dress and appearance.

Re: Rockpool Bar and Grill Lunch with QFF confirmed attendees

I never really understand this whole ongoing debate. I neither care nor is it any of my business what style of clothes someone else wears. As long as their body is reasonably covered and their clothes do not smell then what concern is it of mine? Style is personal and subjective.

PS Hi Vis is in fashion. what's new | women's & men's yoga products | lululemon athletica | lululemon athletica

Although I suspect usage may have been a little different:

"I say Carruthers, that Fyfe-Smethwick chap appears to be a dude" Mr Cholmondly-Warner was heard to say in The Reform Club last night.

:p

Back in my day before the Great War, anyone less than CL should be seen and not heard. ;)

As long as what people wear conforms to the written rules and regulations then honestly, who gives a flying fruit bat.

If you don't like what they are wearing then put on the CL issued eye mask and pretend the world only wears what you find acceptable.

As for me, I enjoy the flotsam and jetsam that people are, you just never know how much of a nice person someone is despite them wearing shorts.

Anecdotally what I've come across is:

1. Mining is 8 days on 6 days off or (9 & 5) for management and 2 (or 3) & 1 (weeks) for the workcrews.
2. Mining Construction: 11 & 3 (days for EPCM), 2 or 3 & 1 (weeks, for Contractor's management) and 4 & 1 (weeks) for the contractor's crew
3. Oil & Gas: Rosters are much more generous, I've encountered 2on & 2off followed by 2on & 4off (weeks)

Nothing official but given 60 odd flights into the Pilbara in the last two years you pick up a bit by talking to people. :p

Yep and I've come across 4/4, 5/5, 6/4 days on/off.

Still 8 and 6 is 2 flights per fortnight or 52 a year which is what my calculation was based on.

Of all the sites I have worked on, the vast majority are 2/1. We ha e had 8/6, 9/5, 2/2, 5/4/4 4/1 and a whole host of others, but it is fair to smart that the vast majority, probably over 75% are on a 2/1 roster.

The other point is that of the 100's of people I have directly interacted with on site close to 80% DON'T collect, understand or have an interest in Points or Status Credits!

Re: Rockpool Bar and Grill Lunch with QFF confirmed attendees

As someone who has hired and fired dozens or more over the years I have learned to look beyond the exterior and see what's inside. Ignoring the thongs issue for a moment, if you would not hire the best candidate for a job because you didn't like their jeans then I dare say any business you decide to run is destined to fail.
Perhaps I am wrong but how someone dresses is extremely important and is a good way to judge their character.

e.g You are invited to a wedding at a church so you turn up in t-shirt, shorts and thongs. Hmmm....

And in my own narrow minded view of the world anytime you are out in public you should be trying to impress people not just with dress standards but with behaviour as well and not having the attitude "I couldn't care less what people think of me...."
