We have done the trip in Y several times, and enjoy our prep in the J Lounge. But I have generally found that with checked luggage they start 3hrs before?
Actually, it's 3 hours:The official word from qantas is 4 hours.
International Check-in Times | QantasCheck-in is open between 3 hours and 60 minutes before departure. We recommend that you are checked-in up to 120 minutes before flight departure.
We are travelling by train from Newcastle. Allowing plenty of time, gives peace of mind.
I was previously told by the checkin staff at Sydney airport that for long haul flights to the US and Europe that checkin opens at T -4hrs; otherwise it is T -3hrs.Actually, it's 3 hours:

I believe F checkin opens 4 hours in advance though.
