Early check in Qantas International Melbourne no bags

Hi. I’m on QF9 Melbourne to Perth today and have no checked bags. Am I able to check in to get a boarding pass more than 3 hours before departure and have longer to enjoy the first lounge?

I can answer my own question on this so it’s here for anyone who asks the same question in the future. I arrived at the airport at 1pm and the first check in suite was open and accepting check in for QF9 with departure time of 450pm.

You could also just check-in online and use the boarding pass in the QF app.

You can’t do this when your travel domestic on an international flight. You need a physical boarding pass with a D sticker on it.

And do remember that even though you're travelling a domestic route, international LAG rules do apply.

Yes it’s about 3 hours

One day when heading through I ran across a fellow I used to work with. He suggested that even if you can checkin 3 hours ahead at the Australian (international departures) airport that there’s a process ABF go through to OPEN each flight so that’s most likely why you can’t check in more than 3 hours ahead

However, if you’re transiting through Australia to NZ for example then you’d already checked in hours earlier but also arrive INSIDE the ABF controlled zone so no need to address that ABF process

yes, I arrived 8.40am for Noon flight to SIN and was told at First counter check in for the flight opened 3 hours before, had to wait in First area until 9am clicked over

when I travelled in July for QF35 (noon departure) I could not check in bags at first class counter until 9am (when flight 'opened' for check in)
