DRW-SYD-MNL is 36,000 QFF + $754.89 or 118,526 QFF. Earns 200 SCs + 7,319. Extra 5,855 if WP. Status Bonii equivalent ~ 2223 QFF. e.g. 02Jul11. Net Cost if WP, 20,603 QFF + $754.89. i.e. (103 QFF + 3.78 AUD) / SC.

DRW-CGK and DRW-SIN should be possible, but probably only 180 or 200 SCs.

AKL-MEL-BNE-TSV is 36,000 QFF + 112.66 NZD (93 AUD) or 42,661 QFF. Earns 200 SCs + 4,554 QFF. Extra 1,643 if WP. e.g. Status Bonii equivalent ~ 2223 QFF. 03Jul11. Net cost if WP, 27583 QFF + 93 AUD. i.e. (138 QFF + 0.50 AUD) / SC. Bit easier than the Hobart Express.

Should work from most NZ airports, but I think AKL-TSV is the winner. AKL-MEL-BNE-CNS is a little more cost, and earns no more SCs.

Combine this for a trip to Europe:
AKL-MEL-BNE-TSV is 36,000 QFF + 112.66 NZD (93 AUD) or 42,661 QFF. Earns 200 SCs + 4,554 QFF. Extra 1,643 if WP.
TSV-BNE-SIN-FRA is 112,000 QFF + 630.99 AUD or 165,529 QFF. Earns 340 SCs. 14,002 as NB. Extra 11,066 as WP?

So AKL-FRA oneway for 148,000 QFF + 724 AUD. Earns 540 SCs + 31265 QFF (WP) + 6000 QFF status bonii. 110,735 QFF + 724 AUD net.

I don't think the schedules quite work back (via MEL), but you could get ~1000 SCs for ~220k QFF net + ~1450 AUD. i.e. (220 QFF + 1.45 AUD) / SC

I think 1200 SCs for ~280k QFF + ~1700 AUD (net) is possible:
You should easily be able to earn another 200 SCs for your positioning flights with the remaining 60k, e.g. BNE-SYD-AKL is 36k QFF + $137.19 AUD. Earns 120 SCs.

With every new deal you post I get a bit closer to aiming for a run to SG with one of these. They’re all looking very attractive!

All good stuff, futaris, but looks like best value comes from non-major gateways. Can we see some itineraries ex-SYD? Being Krisflyer, wouldn't mind using SQ to reposition, either in JFK or FRA. The F and J awards on B747 sectors are good value, as far as I understand.

Can we see some itineraries ex-SYD?

Not going to happen, as QF is extremely SYD centric. Best you can do is SYD-BNE/MEL-AKL, SYD-MEL-LHR or something from CBR.

And everything >9,600 mi (Zone 10) is 128k+++ from SYD. <9,600mi from SYD isn't where QF flies. Only their Oneworld partners fly there, so I don't think that you can't use a cheap JASA. e.g. SYD-LAX/SFO-MIA is 112,000 QFF minimum, but all the Any Seat Awards are 1,000,000+ QFF.

SYD-MEL-SIN-BOM for 84,000 QFF + $236.48. Earns 280 SCs + 8,980 QFF as NB. Extra 6,183 QFF as WP. 3111 Status Bonii. e.g. 28Jun11. 65,726 QFF + $236.48 net. (234 QFF + 0.84 AUD) / SC
SYD-BNE-TSV for 24,000 QFF + $83.07. Earns 100 SCs + 2,500 QFF. 1111 Status Bonii. 20,389 QFF + $83.07 net. (204 QFF + 0.83 AUD) / SC

Thank you to all for the advice on JASAs.

As part of a DONE4 this and next year needed to go SYD-SIN to position next July.

Could have used 60K points + $$$ to get a classic award + no points nor SCs

Instead for 63K points + about the same $$$ I got a JASA SYD-MEL-SIN on an A380 and I get 9700 points and 160SCs! :):):)

Bargain

Again thank you all

Paddy

PS In case you were wondering only had 63K to burn after getting Mrs Paddy to LHR and back)

ADL-SYD-SIN 50,000 QFF + $198.29 or 66,929 QFF all/in. Earns 180 SCs + 6,135 QFF if NB. Extra 3,908 QFF if WP. 2000 QFF Status Bonii. 37,957 QFF + $198.29 net. (211 QFF + 1.11 AUD) / SC
CNS-BNE-SIN 50,000 QFF + $193.19 or 66,361 QFF all/in. Earns 180 SCs + 6,018 QFF if NB. Extra 3,814 QFF if WP. 2000 QFF Status Bonii. 38,168 QFF + $193.19 net. (212 QFF + 1.08 AUD) / SC
TSV-BNE-ADL-SIN 50,000 QFF + $409.71 or 90,580 all/in. Earns 220 SCs + 5,457 QFF if NB. Extra 4,365 QFF if WP. 2444 QFF Status Bonii. e.g. 02Jul11. 37,734 QFF + $409.71 net. (171 QFF + 1.86 AUD) / SC

I just locked in a less attractive JASA example.

SIN-FRA return late March 2011. 168000 points and SGD540 (A$460 inc CC fee). Earns 32299 (all bonii for Platinum) and 320 SC. Net cost 135701 points or (424+A$1.40)/SC.

Reasons for locking it in; J award, when I want/need to travel, within my available points. It is for my 40th so I'm off to an "event". With more points available I could have tried some of the better earning transit options from Australia. Having said that I'm pretty sure that all the "cheap" JASA options from Oz to SIN have dried up now, except some options via PER.

I thought I could lock in something cheap from OZ to SIN later, and maybe try to pick up a SIN-Oz return ticket. No doubt, I'll ask for tips closer to the date. ;)

I just did a JASA from MEL-PER-KGI. for Christmas time.

Reasonable value. the classic award is 72,000 plus $98 in taxes.

All up it cost me:

81,253 points and $100. however it will net me 8388 points and 240 SCs. not bad value in the end.

I've going to KGI anyway so it was worth bumping it to J as it should help get me over the line for WP a month later..:D

Just had a weird experience with ASA today.

I have to get to JNB in a week's time, and a month ago I booked a classic award for 2 (84,000 points and $350 +++). On checking yesterday, I found a very reasonable ASA opened up for 61,000 points per pax - given an earn of 20,000+ points, status credits, and the fare conditions specifying that the ticket was upgradeable, I cancelled the classic awards and rebooked an ASA. Lost the 10,000 points for cancelling, as expected.

So far, so good.

However, the website wouldn't let me waitlist for an upgrade to J on the flight. I re-checked the fare conditions - still states clearly "Flight upgrade awards are eligible on this fare".

I called QF, and the helpful CSR looked through the ticket and told me that it was an ineligible fare class. After some discussion, she went through a dummy booking and - to her great surprise - saw exactly what I did when I made the booking ie an explicit statement that the fare was upgradeable.

At this point she started to get interested; I was on hold for 20 minutes while she spoke to a supervisor and the online ticketing department. She said they are printing everything out and will try to sort it out tomorrow, and in the meantime she would reserve me 2 classic awards seats so that they don't disappear (despite promising not to deduct points, 84,000 points were taken from my account half an hour later).

So -
I am out 10,000 points cancellation, and about 20,000 points excess cost, for a ticket that probably won't provide what was promised.

What would be reasonable to expect as resolution tomorrow?

I would like the 10,000 point cancellation fee refunded, and a goodwill refund of the difference between the ASA and the classic redemption.

Does that sound about right to people?

I don't have a lot of experience in dealing with qantas about these types of things. But generally my experiences have been positive. I would expect that you'll end up with the ASA and an upgrade request.

If not I would expect it is reasonable to get the 10000 points refunded. Given that the nominal cost of the ASA is the same as the Classic award and that it is only cheaper because of points earned I don't think you can expect to get a refund of the difference.

The thing is that if they end up not being able to make the ASA upgradable, why would you switch to the classic booking which also isn't upgradable (maybe I missed something there). Surely you would just stick with the ASA due to the earn?

The net cost of ASA is still around 20,000 points in excess of the classic - 40,000 actual, offset by an earn of 20,000. I don't really need the 40 SCs (although I would value them at around 570 points), therefore the main reason for the change to ASA was to be upgradable.

Anyway, I do expect them to be pretty reasonable, and would be happy with either an upgradeable ASA or a refund of the difference.

Whoops, sorry I misread the 61000 and the 20000 after to mean 20000 less due to the earn.

Has there been a resolution?

Sounds fair.

Sort of! Some times this is what happens when people have confirmed bookings and try to reach for something better that is not as simple as it sounds at first glance.

Just booked a SC run to get me to Gold for my planned big trip in the second half of this year...

24 APR PER 12.35 QP can guest 1
24 APR BNE 19.55 J lounge, depending on inbound flight (due 1900) can guest 1
25 APR CNS 17.05 QP can guest 1
25 APR BNE 19.50 J lounge, again depends on inbound flight due 1910, can guest 1

Out of interest, is this the most SCs one can get in a return (not multicity) JASA within Australia? Its 280rtn in J...

HBA-MEL-PER-KTA = 180 SCs Oneway, 360 SCs return

A bit more checking yielded Karratha-Perth-Brisbane-Cairns for 200 SCs costings about 73000 points for a one way JASA, or Karratha-Perth-Sydney-Cairns for about the same giving 220 SCs one way... If I lived in Karratha that'd be great!
