Eat on Q affecting op-up chances?

So I've got yet another chance for QF to upgrade me (LHR-SYD) next week, but I'm worried that if I select Eat on Q then any op-up chances to F go out the window.

I'd like to have at least 1 free upgrade as a Plat1... 3rd year as P1 and not one op-up

Do you think doing eat on Q will ruin op-up chances?

I can't believe you haven't had an upgrade, my dad got one onboard travelling with me (I was WP) last year, and the year before myself and mum got upgraded (also WP).

As for your question though, I don't think it should affect your chances, but who knows.

My guess is that it wouldn't make any impact. The underlying data i.e meal selection wouldn't be stored in altea and i doubt it would be form part of the fat controllers criteria when selecting who to upgrade.

Its pretty coughpy that you havent had a single Op-Up in 2 years as P1. thats pretty ordinary. Even as a WP I was pulling 1 in 80 over a large sample.

When you travel and route of travel seems to have an effect too. For example during the January school holidays period, I got op-uped on EK once (QF marketed), QF once, and 4 times on AA. Whereas normally in February, I would receive no op-ups at all.

I heard that selecting vegetarian meals would help your op up chances as the bean counters (in their Mascot bunker) believe that kicking this guy up to F will remove the need for such a meal.

You are a P1, so you have no chance of ever being upgraded (just like me). Apparently spending hundreds of thousands of dollars (per year) on air tickets puts you further down the upgrade list than once a year bronze fliers. Ridiculous IMHO.

On QANTAS I always get what I pay for, or slightly less... never ever anything more, which is disappointing c.f. the competition.

I'm not sure how the EatOnQ system works, and how integrated (or not) it is... but if it attaches a special meal condition to your PNR, it could theoretically affect your chances of an op-up, the same way any special meal supposedly does... e.g. if they load a special meal for you in J, by upgrading you that meal would go to waste (and you might not be able to eat what they serve in F)... Or they might serve you a J special meal in F.

Although some say that is an urban myth because we couldn't possibly be seen as discriminating against any group who requires a special meal.

Perhaps Red Roo can shed some light on the situation?

Following up on this...

finally had my first op-up as a P1 on DXB-SYD J->F. Was an onboard upgrade so not sure if those are handled any differently. A vanilla Platinum pax was also upgraded onboard, so at least two people had a happy flight.

As for Eat on Q - well I didn't select anything but would welcome anyone choosing their meals to inform the community if they decide to test it out

If a vanilla WP was also upgraded, then I'm guessing before take-off. SYD-SIN was upgraded from J->F (IIRC 13B -> 5F) - cabin steward approached me after I'd sat down, and said that they've got a new seat for me (then discretely flashed me a new BP). Usually, if you're asked to swap seats in J, they're a bit more deferential ("would you consider swapping seats with xyz for abc reason?"). Prior to this there were a bunch of people milling around 13JK, and not sitting down, so I guessed that some error had occurred, and there were too many pax in J

I had one of these on domestic after pushback as we were taxiing to the runway (can't recall if it was before or after the safety briefing), but the seatbelt sign was definitely on and I was a little hesitant

I have had many of these with the freindly PER crew. Usually as soon as I board, they see my 4A seat & tell me to sit in J. Best suprise ever when it happens.

After I had sat down and settled in... right before push back. I thought at first it was because I'd already traded seats with a guy in the cabin to let him sit with his family. Glad they found where I moved to and didn't upgrade the guy in my original seat! ;p
