Just downloaded an iPhone App called "AUS Votes" which will give a nice live coverage of the vote count tonight ; saves me having to watch the rabble on TV:!:

So you are obviously across the current ONU costs that you need to pay for the NBN that has nothing to do with wiring your house, after all you are responsible for all costs which are past the boundary point which is outside, they are a tad more than the current cost of an ADSL CPE, in fact around 20x more :). Around $1000 per house for a buy of 100000 at a time, that either means a large upfront setup cost + wiring or a long term contract.

How do you think the NBN is going to get to your house otherwise, they are only laying Fibre to the boundry point and you need to work out how to get it to your home, and that does not mean copper or wireless as neither will give you any advantage of your current broadband - " Developers—and, on their own property, property owners—will be required to cover the costs of trenching and ducting. NBN Co will cover the other costs of installing fibre infrastructure in the development, including backhaul." http://www.dbcde.gov.au/broadband/national_broadband_network/fibre_in_new_developments

That's all very interesting but if you had actually read the story in question you would know that it doesn't mention those costs at all. All it talks about is how it is going to cost people $250-$450 per point to install ethernet outlets in their house. It also says that the NBN will provide a 4 port device in the house that acts as a "modem" for the fibre for free.

So you can bang on about the cost from the boundary to the house but the story in question does not raise that as an issue and in fact says that is free. What it does raise as an issue is the cost of "rewiring" ethernet ports in 10000000 homes, which is little more than an anti government scare story.

Thanks, downloading that now, assuming you mean the app made by the ABC, will be useful as I was planning on having a BBQ tonight and wouldn’t be near a TV.

If Julia gets swept away we wont need to hear her torture us with her words that she cannot pronounce like negotiate.
She pronounces Abbott to rhyme with Rabbit.
Could our Government afford an English course for her if she survives tonight's test?
My absolute favourite comment from the past 2 and a half years was:
"If I was to get the $900 which I am not I would buy Peter Garrett a backbone".

If you're going to be condescending and punctilious about the use of English, you should at least use English correctly yourself. "Pronunciate"? Really?

What would prove to be a pleasurable result to see, irrespective of which party wins tonight, would be for Abbott; Julia; Conroy; Swann; Garrett; Feilding and Barnaby Joyce to all loose in their respective electorates.

In the Australian election system, do they need to win their own seat to be the PM? Writing that out makes no sense to me actually, as if you aren’t an MP I’m not sure why you should then get the top job, but I’m sure I’ve heard of places where you have to win your own seat to get the top job, so it must work the other way around.

And excuse my noob-ish comment.

Last minute betting saw the Coalition's odds for victory push out to 3.25. Very good odds and enough for me to wager some more $$$ on it.

Yes. They have to be a member of parliament.

Party leaders tend to be in pretty safe seats, so it's not normally a problem. But have we had one of those situations where the opposition/current leader loses their seat, but the party gains control of parliament???

I honestly do not know what the Electoral Act says regarding the possibility of a standing PM loosing their seat

The question is definitely not a noobish one. It was actually mentioned by commentators regarding John Howard at the last election regarding the possibility that he might not survivie the last election in his own electorate.

As for the names I mentioned, they are all politicians I have a strong dislike for.

I don't either, but there's no way a PM could keep their job if they weren't elected in their electorate.

I assume the Deputy Leader of the party would immediately take control, and that the party would vote in a new PM pretty quickly.

Where it would be very difficult is if a PM's electorate was too close to call for a few days. The uncertainty would make for interesting times.

That too close to call result, ontop of a hung parliament would indeed be an exceedingly messy scenario.

Quote from NoNews:

"His spokesman said: "Mr Rudd voted while visiting various booths in his electorate." "

How many votes did KRudd make?

I think they would all be happy to have a loose seat.

Did you mean lose?

Yes indeed Hvr.

Though at least one of the results I'd have liked to see has failed to come to pass. Wayne Swan got returned.:(

Swan was the incumbent in my electorate. I didn't vote for him, though.

Pretty much every MP with a portfolio has retained their seat, on both sides of the battle.

Same electorate as you, anat0l, and like you I refused to vote for him.

edit: some good news for what I wanted to see, Feilding has failed to be re-elected to the Senate. :)
