The longer the delay to the start date, the better imo!

Yes indeed. But apart from the minor cost, it won't have much impact on me.

With both Australian and UK passports I could (if I wanted to, but I don't) legally stay in Europe permanently (with a minor cross border trip every 3 months).

However, I do strongly feel that Australia should charge a token amount (eg $20) for issuing it's ETA's. The argument that it might put prospective visitors off is nonsense. If you're going to spend $000's on your ticket you're not going to worry about an extra $20.

Not necessarily, as it could speed up processing at the EU border and allow use of the e-Gates. Currently non-EU passport holders need to queue to get a stamp.

If, and a big if, ETIAS allowed use of e Gates that would be great but I wouldn't hold my breath....

Not to mention the Australian Departure Tax (Passenger Movement Charge) - going up to AUD70 next July.

The longer these stupid initiatives get delayed the better. I hate that the world is becoming more closed, "visa free" and "visa on arrival" no longer mean what they used to, and you need to look up every country and figure out what weird nonsense they require you to do before showing up.

planning (& prepaid a lot for) a Europe visit in Feb/ March 2025, so went and had a look at the website ...
A little alarmed when the FAQ section says you should apply for the ETIAS before booking tickets, hotels etc, and then that it will come into operation "sometime in mid-2025".

Typical government shoulder shrug can be anticipated when they announce the actual implementation date which will put the wind up a lot of prospective tourists.
