Emirates Cancels Singapore to Melbourne Flights from 30/3/25

According to The Straits Times article, seat loads were apparently only averaging around 50%.

I assume you're referring to this line in that article:

Since only around 180 of more than 350 seats get filled at the Singapore stop on each flight, the airline could be optimising its traffic flows, said Mr Patel.

I wasn't sure if that meant there was a ~50% load factor between MEL-SIN, or that 180 new passengers joined the flights in Singapore.

Either way, based on my experience these flights often are not full.

It's also what types of PAX. I don't think there are many J/F Pax exSIN for MEL. Most would fly SQ.

It really depends how you’ve bought your ticket.

If through *partner* FF points it’s likely EK will simply notify Aeroplan or Qantas that they have cancelled the route. You’ll then be entitled to a refund, or you’ll need to find alternative award seats. Aeroplan and Qantas have no obligation to find you other seats or rebook.

If you have *paid* cash for your seat, Emirates might rebook you on another airline. Article 9.2.2 of EK’s conditions of carriage say Emirates will select which of three options you can have if they cancel or fail to operate a flight. Option 1 is to accommodate you on another EK flight (can’t happen here), Option 2 is to re-route you on another carrier, Option 3 is a full refund.

But this is an EK choice, not the passengers’. So you might want option 2, but EK may decide option 3.

(obviously if you are booked all the way to DXB option 1 is viable, but for bookings only to SIN it won’t be)

Interesting. A previous version of the COC was far more customer-friendly.

Wow. Indeed.

The previous version used to be industry standard… the passenger was entitled to choose which of the recoveries suited them.

The new wording is very clear that EK will choose which one.

No, Emirates seems to not impose carrier charges on many of its fifth freedom flights. I was looking earlier this year at its fifth freedom flights out of the USA and they, too, have very low carrier charges.

They used to -- I think they cancelled it in 2019.
It exists, just most people that stumble upon it are keeping their mouths shut for the most part because it'll make the travel blog rounds real quick and they might lose it.
I actually had to google the def of a fifth freedom flight.
For emirates it says milan to new york is one.

There was a asian city to EU that had low taxes (which i kept quiet), i had a sample iteinerary saved in about 2019 but that changed about 2022, pity i should have used it

Bugger we booked Phnom Penh return via Singapore at Christmas time it was super cheap J class….hopefully it’s not because they are going to pull a last minute oh sorry here’s your money back

The first flight of my 2019 trip was the QF MEL-SIN (I was connecting on to JL).
The QF aircraft was hit by lightening on the way into MEL which later caused my flight to be cancelled.
Everyone else on the flight was rebooked onto the EK MEL-SIN flight (I was rebooked to HND on QF via SYD)

Didn’t they also once operate a BNE-SIN? Or was that just Etihad.
Yes they did, my first time in emirates F was on the ex BNE - SIN back in 2019, I believe they cut this just after COVID

Out of curiosity. Why was ex sin to melb the only? Flight in the world without stupid taxes? Glitch? Loophole?
And i only found out very last minute

I m hoping like hell that another destination+ origin will become or there is without the stupid amounts of taxes in J/F?
From my experience, I feel like the availability was only recently opened on this route as I had never seen it come up before and we do about 2-3 MEL-SIN trips a year

I wonder if JQ has looked at changing their flight / or adding a new flight to dept MEL around midnight, would offer some good connections to their morning 3K connections out of SIN.

Unlikely as the current flight is a really tight fit in the 787 schedule, it’s certainly not at the top of the most priority routes, it’s always the first to be cancelled or delayed if they need to shuffle the flying plan around. The flight was subject of a long winded discussion the other year, I think it got to around 3 months before one left on time.

I’d say only a matter of time before JQ does the NEO daily MEL-SIN.

Interestingly EK is NOT releasing any additional F seats like they normally do?
Its probably Qantas not offering them as classic reward any more because its more trouble to unwind. I can see this being a major $hit fight getting an alternative same day

Wouldn't they want these flights to be a full as possible? assuming QF knows the end date

They probably don’t know the final date and either do emirates. I’m sure the moment they do they will stop selling otherwise it’s more problems for them to solve.

They are still selling July 2025 on both QF & EK, That has to be a good sign?

Does anyone remember how much time they gave for the SIN - BNE route when they cancelled?

QF doesn't control what Emirates does or doesn't release to them, this is solely up to Emirates, as is the same with any partners - the fact you booked through Qantas doesn't really matter except that you have to deal with their customer service teams...

Also, as has been repeated many times - if EK cancels the flight, QF will simply refund the points and taxes. There won't be any alternatives, as for QF, like if you booked on Aeroplan, they've made you whole.

So you think Qantas would make no effort to rebook an alternative same day as classic reward on their own plane? I would have thought there was an obligation given it is via Qantas FF that they try and provide an alternative. But i dont hold out much hope for a business class replacement i think at best it would be economy same day.
