Not that great.

Try getting a discounted fare to LHR in late June.

$1844 return to Moscow? Pfffft. I recently paid $1730 return on SQ to Moscow from Brisbane for flights on December 5th & return on March 4th.

Yes, prices to LHR are not great in June, but as its the northern hemisphere summer, that was always going to be unlikely. Before may the prices look OK to the UK and IRL, the rest of Europe not so much.

With the proposed tie-up with Emirates is anyone expecting Qantas to release some early bird deals? If you have a look at what Singapore, Cathay and Emirates have at the moment Qantas are not even close to been competitive.

MH have sub $6000 Business Class fares to Europe out at the moment. They may be Oneworld sometime next year too... Amadeus is already accepting Qantas frequent flyer numbes in MH bookings, where previously they were rejected as not having any agreement. While there arent any points being awarded, its a good sign things are progressing!

Qantas are not discounting at the moment, to the USA:
Y they are about $100-$400 more than other carriers
J they are about $1000-$3000 more than other carriers

You can get J on Air NZ for $900 more than Y+ on QF....

From a SPAM email last night - Etihad Early Bird (Feb-May 2013) - Y from $1,559 (LHR).
(But I had no need to follow up.)

Yes this is lovely, but what frequent flyer flys Y, I fly J. Have a look at EK for J class tickets, not cheap.

I had a look at PER-SIN-LHR-DUB last night for Christmas. 2 pax travelling all QF except LHR - DUB (BA).

QF Y+ $12,750
QF J $13,403

That was for both of us. Guess which one I booked.

Now I'm $13,403 poorer. :-(

I fly mainly economy but not sure whether you would class me as a frequent flyer....

I think you're even more a frequent flyer (by the meaning of the words) if you make it to Gold or Platinum status in Y (or even solely domestic saver Y), than flying in J or F on long-haul 2 or 3 times per year... That's why its called frequent flyer, not a "premium class flyer" or something similar.

If it were me (and don't forget the money is coming out of my own pocket, and I don't work or run a business of any kind), I might look at Etihad business class CMB-DUB-CMB at a cost pre-Xmas of SGD 3,463 (AUD 2,750) per person all in. I would fly PER-SIN-CMB on a LCC and it would cost of the order of AUD 600 round-trip. So for less than $3,500 pp you get to fly to DUB mostly in bus class.

But that's just me. I hate to see money wasted.

I'm kinda hoping there will be some great introductory fares out there when the deal gets its go ahead. But maybe that's just wishful thinking- I hate how Qantas only once or twice a year has a good deal on that does include J rather than Y only specials.
