Emirates inflight safety video

Hmm, I used to think that safety videos had too much fluff, but then this video is so basic and routine that I just found myself tuning out. After the intro comments about being different from the rest, the spoken words throughout are just a basic copy-paste of what I've already heard hundreds of times, so I stopped listening because I knew there wouldn't be anything I haven't heard before. By trying to be so 'different', they've made themselves indistinguishable from the rest by blending in too much, IMO.

The other airline videos at least have a slight entertainment value and change somewhat between aircraft and flight length. On the latest Qantas video, Nestor sometimes introduces himself by name and where he works - and sometimes he just gets straight into it... so I find myself paying closer attention to see what kind of mood Nestor is in today - business or social. 😂

That said, I didn't really like NZ's safety rap... over the crummy airplane speakers or economy headsets, you could never understand too well what was actually being said. I had to go home and rewatch it on YouTube with better speakers to hear the briefing... but if I'd actually needed the info, I'd be flailing down an evacuation slide. 😂

I simply stopped watching it onboard.
Ooh unpopular opinion from me, I love the MH one and I (generally) really dislike the tacky/trying-too-hard safety videos (don't like the current QF one, don't like the NZ one, etc).

There's something about the catchy song (put it on yourself before you put it on someone else) and the tacky comments (everything's better when we fly together) lol.

And the delivery is so low energy!

Hang on, wasn’t Emirates’ safety videos always ‘no-nonsense’?

I don’t recall seeing any creative/entertaining safety videos from EK.

Some get remembered for all the wrong reasons, but maybe that's still a success in the end. The MH one was one of them... I realised it was already drilled into me after a few flights in a row with them, despite dreading hearing it again

Any idea of whether this new video will be dubbed into Arabic? Or have EK ditched the Arabic version of the safety video and are now just showing Arabic captions on the English version?

Emirates' cabin procedure is to make all announcements in Arabic first where possible, followed by English, followed by another language if warranted by the destination. It's probably safe to assume that they'd play the demo in Arabic and then English, but we shall see!

Exactly.

There’s probably a line between needing to keep attention, and one where there’s so much rubbish - or it’s just too boring - and people tune out.

I really really liked the previous qantas one. It was fun to look through the years, and it never got boring. (but that’s just me)

Even though this one from Emirates says it’s ’no nonsense’ they still *begin* with nonsense about not having singing and dancing, and taking a swipe at other videos. Kinda undermines the message right from the get-go.

There are only 2 potential objectives for these videos:

1) Media hype -> attention to airline
2) No hype, no-nonsense, check the box and move on

EK is aiming for their usual (2), with a touch of point 1.

I think it worked.

The fact that Qantas has already had to re-edit the safety video shows this most recent version didn't land. A newer one can't come soon enough and hope it is quicker and actually features the inside of an aircraft.
Agreed, can't see Qantas using it next year and beyond. They're probably already working on a new one, but I doubt it would be a return to 'basics' like this EK one

Attention to the airline, yes. But you also need to keep passengers engaged? There are some good, entertaining videos that keep you watching to the end.

EK no nonsense, and appropriately short. Less than 4minutes - don't need to keep passengers engaged when it's short and to the point.
Excellent

"If you can't say it in 5 minutes, you can't say it"

Interesting Article about human attention span. No we don't have an attention span of a goldfish🤣 (ok maybe some)

Do you really need 5 minutes?

I recall telling FOs who went into lengthy briefings that they had 90 seconds. Don’t tick boxes. Tell me what I actually need to know.

It was always going to be edited. The problem was they launched the media version first and many didn’t appreciate the difference.

I don’t really mind the new video, I’d rank it equal to “double shot mate”. My preference is live spoken briefings as they are always much shorter. I flew JAL for the first time this year and I completely zoned out during their briefing, it was boring as all hell and just as long as QF’s.

JAL is 4 minutes for two languages. QF is over 8 minutes for two.

Well it’s not like you are supposed to watch both languages.

I actually find the bilingual ones (where everything is said twice) really disjointed and hard to stay focussed especially if it’s boring.

I'm not talking about the media released one. The ones released for actual use onboard have already been edited.

Must be minimal changes because I haven’t noticed it.

If it were written by a pilot it would start along the lines of “listen to this or you might die”. It’s sad that it’s become a form of entertainment (that nobody wants anyway) as that devalues the actual safety message.

My wife just suggested a new way of organising evacuations. Let those without any hand luggage go first.

I think the changes are noticeable.
All references to the destinations have been removed eg. “Welcome to Hollywood” with the exception of the introduction scene. It just cuts straight to the safety demo part of each segment.
