I am QF WP. Have been for 10 of last 11 years. I flew EK recently for the first time from BKK to DXB. My prompting to fly EK was the new EK and QF deal. I was flying under an EK number so only getting a fraction of the miles I would if it was a QF code share number but preferred that to opening a new Skywards account as I dont think I will be flying EK that often.
I was looking forward to the EK product as I had heard much praise from other flyers. I was also looking forward to seeing how they would treat a top tier QF flier. I was stunned to see how shamelessly they tried to poach me from QF and win me over to the EK program. It started at check in. Without a hesitation or moment of reflection the checkin agent upgraded me to first class. "We hope you enjoy the Emirates experience" the agent said, handing over the boarding pass. On the plane, efforts increased. This is the exchange with the first class stewardess.
"Mr Hughes, welcome aboard. Let me show you to your seat"
"Thank you", I said
"Is this your first time flying Emirates?"
"Yes I said, I am here because of your new deal with Qantas"
pause
"Have you heard of our Skywards program?" as she pulls out brochure and hands it to me. Within one minute of being on the plane I had in my hads a class of Dom Perignon and a Skywards application form
On two other occasions during the flight she mentioned the program.
While serving me caviar she mentioned that a return first class ticket would see me a long way to Gold on Skywards. As the plane was wrapping up and getting ready to descend she came back to check if I had filled in the brochure to get a Skywards membership.
The flight back also saw me upgraded to first. I slept that flight so did not see if the attendant was looking to shill me on the program.
The conspiracy theorist in me sees this as a deliberate effort by EK to target top QF flyers. If true, QF is playing a dangerous game of exposing their top flyers to an airline hungry to gobble them up.
Anyone else had a similar experience?
