eSims, what is your experience.

Uh-oh. Opened the Flexiroam app, found it had kicked me out.

Couldn't log back in - sent in a loop of use e-mail, e-mail to app, to e-mail etc

Downloaded new version. Wouldn't accept old password. Couldn't reset password. Deleted new app, re-installed.

OK, got in with new password.

Don't like the new look (change!), but I guess I'll get used to it.

Yeah, I meant to mention the logout popup. I swiped it away and installed the update.

We never used to have a password - so that’s probably a major security improvement.

But I did a quick password reset and up and running straight away.

I forgot one step for me. After the first install of the new version, my iPhone inserted a 'stong password', but the app said - can't be more than 16 characters. Couldn't get rid of the strong password, so had to delete and do it again.

Tricky.

There are some very good discounts on eSIMs for Japan, Bali and USA on Klook at the moment.

I just bought a 20 GB Japan SIM for $21.40 using the promo code.

The new Flexiroam app (at least on iPhone) apart from a total UI refresh, now has buttons to explore “Voice & Text” add ons and now Airline “Inflight data” plans.

The V&T used to be buried in the Regional (and some local country) searches and might be of value to some.
The new Flexiiroam app prompts you to re éteres your MC details (eg 28°).

Don’t! (for now)

Unless you intend to claim your free Global eSIM.

I re-entered mine and it automatically issued my Global free eSIM. It’s unclear how long I have to activate before it expires. In the past, it was 3mths (maybe 6mths) but the Ts&Cs hint I might have until 31 Dec.

I tried a chat with helpdesk but haven’t got anywhere. Will try again, and again and report back.

If however, you can now request the sim and sit on it until required, up to 31 Dec, that’s not a bad thing. Especially for those considering cancelling their 28° MC when the monthly card fee kicks in….😭

My previous experience was that after the eSIM is issued, you have until the end of year to activate it.

I thought my previous one was 6mths to activate (which is fine anyway being August) but most new plans I’ve purchased have 3 mths.

Yep, finally received a message back from Flexiroam confirming activate the MC freebie by 31 Dec.

Anyone cancelling their 28° MC should order their free eSIM first.

Coming to grips with the fact that the new app is horrible! Work experience kids were let loose….

It used to know you had the MC discount and automatically apply it. Doesn’t anymore and won’t even accept the manual discount code….

Opened yet another chat to find out WTF….

I use AirAlo in Turkey and Japan. Only bad experience was in VN can't get it to work and instantly drained my data.

I had a similar problem with Airalo in Spain last year (as mentioned upthread a while back). It worked, but just seemed to gobble up data like no tomorrow. But I’m now pondering if it’s a Spanish Telco thing - my Flexiroam Spain plan also evaporated quickly. Although, I’ve reported to AFF that the upgrade to larger picture sizes might mean we’re using more data….

How much data do youngish people use a day/week/month when travelling?
I was really surprised - early teen grandson got a phone for their birthday and easily chewed up their 1GB daily allowance. They are now on a new unlimited plan (capped at 15Mbps).

^^ Youth use lots of data watching videos - tiktok, YouTube etc.
But might use less over holidays if they are more active.

My average use on holidays is typically less as it's really only maps, emails etc when out and about, and normally hotel wifi in an evening.

I discovered on my recent trip that AFF was gobbling up data. The higher res photos being posted aren’t compressed when viewed (downloaded)!

I read through NMs post and all that gets into my brain is:

Bork, Bork, Bork…

So instead I’ll just leave this here as the eSIM I’ve purchased for a Sep/Oct trip to mostly Portugal.

Can be found within these Europe offerings:
@Scarlett how’s escapesim going for you on your trip?

I was just looking at it for an option in NZ soon. It appears to be Oz owned?

My international eSIM experience has been with using Airalo on my iPhone for data-only use (but you can make voice calls via WhatsApp etc.). Easy to install via the app on the phone - step by step configuration instructions included. Plenty of options for country, region or global eSIMS. Top-up-able, inexpensive plans, work out-of-the-box. Never had an issue, so can recommend. Cheaper than Telstra Day-Pass.

Pretty much anything is cheaper than Telstra “day pass”…

Is Airalo still issuing an eSIM per plan? Or can you now just install an eSIM once and add “plans” as you go?

Most eSIM providers now seem to issue a eSIM once and then once that’s installed, you just buy subsequent Country, Regional or Global plans via the app as you need them.

My recent experience with Flexiroam seamlessly switching between Country, Regional and Global plans while travelling to/from and around Europe on the same eSIM was vwey good. They (Airalo and Flexiroam) are otherwise priced very similarly but neither are the cheapest out there.

Hence why I was exploring other options for NZ (but definitely not one based in a country north of us).

Yeah it's still an eSIM per plan, as they're just reselling carriers in HK, Thailand etc. with cheap roaming plans.

Has anyone used RedTeaGo directly before? My understanding is that a lot of the new smaller providers are just reselling their services. Also I believe the Klook eSIMs are rebadged RedTeaGo.

I might give them a shot next time instead of my usual choice (Ubigi) as they're slightly cheaper, but I'm not sure if they route traffic through another country (as in it runs in "Roaming" mode) or not (like a real local SIM).
