E-mail from Etihad outlining changes to fare structure, varying flexibility, allowances etc.

On 14 September 2015, Etihad Airways will launch Fare Choices. For all bookings ticketed before that date, the existing rules apply.

Fare Choices offer our guests the ability to tailor their journey according to their needs. Some guests want to travel light and on a budget, whilst others want to be able to make last-minute travel decisions, carry extra baggage or earn more miles.

We have created new Fare Choices for our Economy, Business and First Class guests. They vary by:

  • How flexible you need it to be
  • What baggage allowance you need
  • How many miles you will earn
  • What other benefits you value when you travel - priority check-in, chauffeur service, upgrade eligibility.

The various combos here. Interesting that for a First/Business Guest Seat, priority check-in will depend on Tier Status!

I don't get it - is this just a rejig of the fare families for Etihad fares? I must be missing something, as I have little experience with buying EY fares.

I was thinking along the lines that there was a lot of component based pricing or something like that.

Also, when they say the allowance is, for example for First, "2 pieces, up to 32 kg", they really mean to write more clearly, "2 pieces, each up to 32 kg", i.e. 64 kg of luggage. It'd be a bit stingy for First Class to only be able to bring 32 kg in all. On that note, it is worth noting that whilst the total amount of weight that a First and Business Class passenger can carry goes up, for many Economy passengers, it will be going down, viz. from 30 kg per passenger to 1 piece weighing up to 23 kg, the exception being Economy passengers on more flexible fares which get 2 x 23 kg pieces (net allowance going up).

Interesting that for a First/Business Guest Seat, priority check-in will depend on Tier Status!

That is interesting. So if I redeem Etihad miles for a First Apartment award (whether through EY, VA or AA), but I have no status at all (no EY, no VA, etc.), where do I go to check-in?
